Apple debuts a touchscreen MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR tandem OLED display, light-up logo, and M5 Pro or M5 Max; the 14" starts at $2,899, the 16" at $3,399

The world's best pro laptop now features an industry-leading tandem OLED display, an intuitive Touch experience …

Apple

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s 2024 MacBook Pro refresh started at $1,999 for the 14-inch model, while the M4 Pro configuration began at $2,499. Reporting before the launch had flagged a $400 step-up for the OLED touch configuration; Apple has made that premium positioning official with its new touchscreen MacBook Pro lineup.

The launch also sits beside Apple’s newly announced $1,999 M6 MacBook Pro, creating a clearer split between a lower-priced pro notebook and a touch-and-tandem-OLED flagship tier. The redesigned hinge described in Apple’s hardware details is central to making touch a credible laptop input rather than a display-only upgrade.

First-order effects

  • Apple gives pro buyers a $2,899-and-up MacBook Pro tier that combines M5 Pro or M5 Max chips with touch input and a tandem OLED display.
  • The $1,999 M6 MacBook Pro remains Apple’s lower entry point, making display and interaction hardware—not just processor choice—a visible basis for moving up the range.

Second-order effects

  • Apple’s MacBook Pro merchandising must distinguish the new touch models from retained lower-priced notebooks on workflow value, because the launch price is above the previously reported M5 Pro baseline.
  • The redesigned hinge and enhanced speaker system make the touchscreen model a more integrated hardware proposition, raising the standard Apple sets for future premium MacBook Pro revisions.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple continues separating processor tiers from interface and display tiers, the MacBook Pro line shifts toward feature-led segmentation rather than chip generation alone.
  • Touch on Apple’s flagship notebook establishes a path for Mac software and pro workflows to accommodate direct manipulation alongside keyboard-and-trackpad input.

The trend: Apple is turning the MacBook Pro into a more explicitly tiered pro platform, with touch and advanced display hardware becoming premium differentiators alongside silicon.

Steve Jobs in 2010, talking up iPad: No one wants to use a touch screen on a MacBook because after a while “your arm wants to fall off.” Apple in 2026: let's see if the way people interact with their devices has changed enough so that's no longer true. Very curious!

Less than I think we maybe all thought, but still seems like a good “upgrade.” I bet this the only time we ever see Pro/Max SKUs in both form factors. They'll keep M7 in the old chassis and then move M7 Pro/Max (assuming they skip M6 as rumored) to this as the only option.
