Apple unveils a touchscreen MacBook Pro with a 14" or 16" PROLED XDR display, a light-up Apple logo, M5 Pro and M5 Max, for $2,899+ and $3,399+

The world's best pro laptop now features an industry-leading tandem OLED display, an intuitive Touch experience, blazing-fast M5 Pro …

Apple

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s 2024 MacBook Pro refresh began at $1,999, while Apple’s 2026 display strategy had already pushed premium screen technology into the $3,299 Studio Display XDR. The company also introduced a separate $1,999 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro on the same day, creating a clearer divide between the mainstream Pro model and the touch-equipped M5 Pro/Max tier.

Reports ahead of the announcement had flagged a $2,899 starting price for the touch model, and Apple’s launch confirms that the new display and input design carry a substantial premium over the entry Pro configuration.

First-order effects

  • Professional MacBook buyers gain a touch-enabled M5 Pro/Max option at $2,899 for 14 inches and $3,399 for 16 inches, making the new interface and PROLED XDR display features of the high-end configuration rather than the base MacBook Pro.
  • Apple must support touch as a first-class Mac interaction model, alongside the redesigned hinge it says is intended to keep the display stable during use.

Second-order effects

  • Apple’s simultaneous $1,999 M6 model gives buyers a lower-cost route into the MacBook Pro line, concentrating the touch display’s price premium on customers who value the M5 Pro/Max configuration.
  • The sharper internal price ladder makes display quality and direct manipulation key reasons to trade up, rather than processor generation alone.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple maintains touch as a Pro-tier feature, MacBook differentiation shifts further toward premium displays and input hardware, with software interface design becoming part of the upgrade cycle.
  • The split between a conventional entry MacBook Pro and a touch-equipped high-end model points to a more segmented Mac lineup, where capability is packaged by workflow and price tier.

The trend: Apple is turning the MacBook Pro upgrade path into a premium hardware-and-interface proposition, not solely a chip-performance refresh.

Fully prepared for Apple to just come out and say it's the “MacBook Pro with OLED display” in the same way there was a “MacBook Pro with Retina display” above the regular MacBook Pro in 2012. There are just so many possibilities. It's fun to guess! Any minute now.

  • @samifathi Sami Fathi on x
No one can convince me this is a good experience. Mac shouldn't have touch, and definitely not for things Apple's marketing implies it should be used for, like playing the piano. Steve Jobs is proven right again.

Steve Jobs in 2010, talking up iPad: No one wants to use a touch screen on a MacBook because after a while “your arm wants to fall off.” Apple in 2026: let's see if the way people interact with their devices has changed enough so that's no longer true. Very curious!

NEW: Apple announces the touch screen Macbook Pros going on sale Nov 6th starting at $2,899 for 14 in and $3,339 for 16 in. It has a “PROLED XDR” display with an M5 Pro/Max chip. WHO ASKED FOR THIS? WHO IS THIS FOR? JOBS IS ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE

  • @snazzylabs Quinn Nelson on x
Less than I think we maybe all thought, but still seems like a good “upgrade.” I bet this the only time we ever see Pro/Max SKUs in both form factors. They'll keep M7 in the old chassis and then move M7 Pro/Max (assuming they skip M6 as rumored) to this as the only option.
