Apple HomeView demo: a square screen with a personalized, iPhone-like experience based on facial recognition, up to six users, Siri AI, and a closed ecosystem

7 things you need to know about the new smart home displayJohn Voorhees /MacStories:Apple Unveils HomeView: A Smart Home Display Powered by Siri AIShimul Sood /Digital Trends:Apple just gave your home a brain, and it's called HomeViewDaniel Howley /Yahoo Finance:Apple debuts HomeView hub as it reinvents smart home strategyTom Sykes /The Apple Post:Apple HomeView: Everything you need to know about Apple's new smart home displayMax Buondonno /The Shortcut:Apple HomeView announced: new Siri AI hub

Wall Street Journal Nicole Nguyen

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple's home strategy had been anticipated since a wall-mounted control display was reported in 2024, then sharpened in July 2026 around a square screen, facial recognition, a refreshed HomePod mini and Apple TV. The launch turns that reported hub into the center of a broader Apple Home Collection that includes collaborations with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric.

The key distinction is household identity: HomeView recognizes up to six people and adapts the interface, while Siri AI makes the screen an assistant surface rather than only an appliance controller. Public reaction also highlighted the trade-off: John Voorhees criticized the lack of third-party apps beyond unspecified music and video services.

First-order effects

  • Shared-home users receive personalized HomeView experiences through facial recognition, making Apple’s interface account-aware in a setting where several people use the same device.
  • Apple’s closed app model limits HomeView’s immediate software surface to Apple-controlled experiences and unspecified music and video apps, rather than a broad third-party app catalog.

Second-order effects

  • LG Electronics and Schneider Electric gain a more prominent Apple-controlled interface for their Apple Home Collection accessories, tying partner value more closely to HomeView’s household presence.
  • The new HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV become complementary endpoints in the HomeView-centered home strategy, rather than separate smart-home products.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple extends personalized recognition across more household devices, the smart home shifts toward a shared identity-aware hub that mediates access to assistants, media and accessories.
  • A closed household interface concentrates distribution power with the platform owner: accessory makers and service providers must fit Apple’s software rules to reach the home screen.

The trend: Smart-home platforms are evolving from voice-controlled device collections into identity-aware assistant layers organized around a shared display.

The lack of third-party apps other than unspecified music and video apps on the HomeView is disappointing, but I love the design that blends Apple Watch faces, with widgets. My story: https://www.macstories.net/...

HomeView is the first Apple product in a while that I will instantly buy. I haven't cared at all about the Vision Pro, the iPhone Duo, or many other things lately. All-new, reasonably affordable, and I see benefits that suit me. It has been so long since I felt this way.

Got to love that the $299 Home View supports up to SIX users but Apple STILL won't support multiple users on iPad

Oh wow! HomeView will come with a Power Mount PoE adapter next year for $129 Crazy that PoE can supply enough power for the speakers!

The pricing of the Apple Homeview confuses me There's a normal version which includes an additional speaker, USB-C cable and 30W wall brick. Then there is the wall-mounted one that doesn't include any of that. ... both cost $300.

Apple missed a huge opportunity with HomeView. Why not make the wall-mounted version a thermostat too? Imagine replacing your Nest or Ecobee with one beautiful Apple display that controls your HVAC, security cameras, lighting, music, and entire smart home, all powered by Siri. No…

You can tap your iPhone to your HomeView to continue where you left off

Remember when they decided the iMac should have white bezels to make it more comfortable around other parts of the home that usually have white walls, like the kitchen? 😅

“The [HomeView] device recognizes up to six people and delivers a personalized experience.” Alright, @Apple has finally realized that multiple people may share a device. Can we get this same capability on iPad? Pretty please?

Apple HomeView looks great! Finally a replacement for my previous solution “kids broken ipad”
