63 articles decelerating

A 43-article peak in 2026 Q2 tracked Polymarket’s move into U.S. market access and sports partnerships alongside mounting insider-trading and regulatory scrutiny.

Who they are

Polymarket is a prediction-markets platform at the center of coverage about event-based trading, operating globally while prohibited for U.S. users and pursuing CFTC and NFA approval for U.S. margin trading. Stories repeatedly position it alongside rival Kalshi, with CEO Shayne Coplan a prominent company representative.

The recent arc

Coverage accelerated sharply through 2026 Q1 and peaked in Q2 as Polymarket shifted from being chiefly a regulatory flashpoint to a more consequential market-infrastructure and sports-platform story. The Wall Street Journal reported in March that MLB made Polymarket its official prediction-markets platform, including exclusive data access and restrictions on contracts presenting “integrity risk”; CNBC then reported that Polymarket was preparing perpetuals and that congressional scrutiny had widened to insider-trading safeguards at both Polymarket and Kalshi.

The same period was dominated by allegations that event markets can reward privileged information or distort the events being traded. ABC News reported criminal cases tied to Polymarket bets on Nicolás Maduro’s removal and Google’s Year in Search results, while Bloomberg reported suspected weather-sensor tampering near Paris airport alongside unusual Polymarket betting. By July, coverage had also returned to access and oversight: France’s gambling authority blocked the site, and Dune Analytics found that wallets funded through U.S.-regulated exchanges represented about half of traceable platform volume since January 2021 despite the U.S. ban.

The tension

The central tension is Polymarket’s contest with Kalshi to define the event-trading market while regulators, lawmakers, sports leagues, and international authorities decide whether these products are financial markets or gambling-like venues vulnerable to insider trading and manipulation. The rivalry has reportedly extended beyond customers and product launches to lobbying, dealmaking, and influence campaigns, even as their combined wagering growth and World Cup activity underscore the scale of the category they are competing to own.

Why it matters

Polymarket’s trajectory matters because its expansion tests whether prediction markets can become mainstream financial and information products without losing credibility over market integrity, user access, and resolution rules. If the platform secures durable regulated U.S. participation and sustains partnerships such as MLB’s, it could help establish a broader event-trading model; continuing enforcement cases, foreign blocks, and concerns over U.S. participation could instead make compliance and surveillance the category’s limiting factors.

Polymarket has appeared in 63 articles since 2024-05. Coverage peaked in 2026Q2 with 43 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Kalshi, CFTC, Shayne Coplan, Dune Analytics.
