The story behind the story

Sources: Meta is building a standalone prediction markets app called Arena, which would probably rely on video game-like points instead of money wagers

The app, internally called “Arena,” would be independent of Facebook and Instagram.  It could compete for attention with Polymarket and Kalshi, the biggest prediction markets.

New York Times

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta’s reported Arena project is positioned as a standalone product rather than a feature inside Facebook or Instagram, putting it in the same attention market as prediction-market specialists Polymarket and Kalshi. Related reporting says Meta has also explored potential partnerships with those companies, suggesting it is evaluating both build and distribution options.

The planned product is reportedly designed around points rather than cash wagers, while Meta AI would help generate questions from trending topics, recommend markets, and resolve them. That makes Arena as much an AI-driven engagement format as a conventional trading venue.

First-order effects

  • Meta would add a dedicated prediction product to its app portfolio, with Arena initially differentiated from Polymarket and Kalshi by its likely non-cash, game-like points system.
  • Polymarket and Kalshi face a new potential competitor for users’ time and topical participation, even as Meta reportedly considers partnership discussions with them.

Second-order effects

  • A points-based design could push Arena to compete on question discovery, recommendations, social participation, and repeat engagement rather than on monetary payouts.
  • If Meta uses AI to source and resolve markets, the quality and trustworthiness of automated question selection and resolution become central product issues, not merely back-end tooling.

Third-order effects

  • The project points toward prediction mechanics becoming a broader consumer-engagement layer that can be distributed by large social and AI platforms, rather than remaining confined to specialist market operators.
  • Whether this model scales will depend on whether platforms can make AI-mediated forecasting feel credible and useful without the cash incentives that distinguish established prediction markets.

The trend: Consumer platforms are beginning to treat prediction markets as an AI-personalized, socially distributed content format, with specialist operators potentially serving as both competitors and partners.

I remember the late Clay Christensen, the scholar of ‘disruptive’ innovation, making the point at a conference we hosted when I was at The Economist years ago that Meta (then Facebook) was, in fact, not a particularly innovative company.  It is a follower, a buyer, a copier, ofte…

Facebook, fresh off its virtual reality woes, is looking to start its own gambling den: “Mr. Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Meta, recently dispatched a small team at his company to create a smartphone app similar to Polymarket and Kalshi.”  Via NYT

I'm actually expecting this to happen a LOT more: A company does X as their bread-and-butter. But now, with AI, they realize “hey we can build quickly.” So they build a product to do Y (where they know nothing about Y.) I'm sure in some cases it will work, mostly crash&burn tho

why create the world's top platform for political & sports ragebait, then let Kalshi monetize it?

Meta copied slot machines to addict kids to Instagram. Now Zuckerberg is turning his company into a prediction market. Meta's business model is profiting from addiction—kids, gamblers, & more. Stop it through KOSA & my prediction markets bills. https://www.nytimes.com/...

It's interesting that Mark Zuckerberg 1) launched one of the best products of all time, 2) made one of the most successful acquisitions of all time, and 3) is so bad at everything else but can't be removed because of how he organized his company www.nytimes.com/2026/06/23/t...

Every copycat app like this from Meta fails.  100% of the time.  —  The only successful Meta apps are acquisitions or those that coerce an existing massive user base to use it (FB Messages, Threads) [embedded post]
