Mac Pro

Apple discontinued the Mac Pro in March 2026 after its M2 Ultra refresh struggled to distinguish itself from the cheaper Mac Studio.

Who they are

Mac Pro is Apple’s high-end desktop line, appearing in coverage as the company’s former flagship workstation for professional users and as a milestone in the broader Mac transition from Intel processors to Apple silicon. Its story is tightly linked to Apple, the Mac, Mac Studio, and pro-oriented MacBook Pro hardware rather than to the company’s mass-market devices.

The recent arc

Coverage peaked around the 2019 redesign, when WWDC previews framed a new, upgradeable Mac Pro and pro display as a major return to the workstation market. The next sustained phase came during Apple’s silicon transition: reports tracked delayed M2 Ultra plans, testing, and whether the machine would preserve the 2019 design while dropping user-upgradeable RAM. Apple ultimately refreshed the Mac Pro with M2 Ultra in June 2023, alongside the M2 Max/M2 Ultra Mac Studio, and characterized the launch as completing the Mac’s move to Apple silicon.

The post-launch coverage shifted rapidly from transition milestone to product-line rationale. A Verge survey of more than 20 professionals found almost all did not plan to buy the M2 Ultra Mac Pro, while Ars Technica called the M2 Ultra Mac Studio the better value for most users. Bloomberg later reported that the Mac Pro had been deprioritized, before 9to5Mac reported in March 2026 that Apple discontinued it and had no plans for future Mac Pro hardware.

The tension

The core tension is between a costly, specialized expandable workstation and Apple’s increasingly capable compact and portable silicon machines. The M2 Ultra Mac Studio directly compressed the Mac Pro’s performance-and-price case, while reports that the redesigned model would lack upgradeable RAM undercut a defining expectation of pro workstation buyers; high-end MacBook Pro configurations further broadened Apple’s alternatives for professional workloads.

Why it matters

If the discontinuation holds, the Mac Pro’s exit would signal that Apple sees its professional desktop strategy as better served by Mac Studio and other Apple-silicon Macs than by maintaining a separate modular tower. The coverage does not establish whether Apple will introduce another workstation-class product, but it does show that the company’s silicon transition made the legacy distinction between its top desktop and less expensive machines increasingly difficult to sustain.

Mac Pro has appeared in 52 articles since 2015-04. Coverage peaked in 2019Q4 with 10 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Apple, Mac, Trump, iMac.
