This broke Twitter for me, making it impossible for me to engage as I have for years. I *post* from a dedicated, logged-in session because there is no alternative, but as a target of state surveillance orders, I *read* via anon sessions (nitter) on a diff VM. Now I can't.... http…
An oh so ‘funny’ tweet from someone who neither cares about nor understands the importance of Twitter to vulnerable & isolated people. Sadly, he owns the platform. https://twitter.com/...
This is all strangely out of a Trump-like playbook: 1) Create disaster via half-baked policy change 2) Users protest in response, resulting in more people talking about Elon/Twitter as a result 3) Revert the change or reduce its impact significantly. Expect praise in return https…
Man in Donut Shop. “A dozen donuts please!” “Sure” Comes back a hour later “A dozen donuts please!” “Sorry, no” “There are dozens of donuts behind you” “I can't serve you and all these other people at the same time.” “You just handed that guy a donut” “He's paying extra” Leaves. …
I can query the most powerful AI that is publicly available for free over 300 times a day (using Microsoft Bing in creative mode, which uses GPT-4). But you can only read 600 tweets for free. And Twitter makes money when I read tweets.
Best guess: Twitter tried to do something stupid with their API, they messed it up in a way that will take days, so Elon is doing this new “you can only read 600 posts a day” thing as a cover, and he'll say “after hearing your feedback, we've reversed the policy” when it's fixed.
Twitter's strategies are entirely contradictory. You can't be a good place for creators or advertisers if you limit tweet views. It breaks the flywheel of traffic that's needed for the platform to be useful to both sides. A self own that ultimately will have to be reversed.
Companies are scrapping Twitter because the API was switched from free to astronomically expensive. Simple. Adjust API price, remove login wall & read limits, ad revenues recover. Maybe I should do this job? https://twitter.com/...
Twitter is temporarily limiting users to 6000 read posts per day. Good thing I spent the past 9 months meticulously hand-writing the 25,000 most viral tweets ever onto cue cards and can now revisit them without hitting any limits. https://twitter.com/... [image]
@elonmusk Why not rate limit it based on good behavior/tenure/etc? For instance, an account in good standing would get 95th percentile usage limits whereas a brand-new account would get a lot less? Most users would not need to know the rate limits.
@elonmusk It seems sad to penalize the many due to the few. Surely Twitter's data science team has already determined what a “good user” looks like after all these years.
“Rate limit exeeded” messages aren't a joke I seems. Makes sense login being required was made a thing otherwise you couldn't put these “viewing” restrictions in place. “Temporaily” advertisers are just going to love this. https://twitter.com/...
Amazing how a once mostly reliable social media site is just going down the tubes because some incompetent apartheid rich guy wanted his ego stoked by fascists. [image]
A reg wall + limiting the number of posts users can consume without warning is a gobsmacking act. 1st, it was pay for your tweets to get seen. Now, it's pay to read access tweets — & even then, still be rate limited. (6000/day isn't much.) TBD who does so, & how many leave. [imag…
And think about the implications for advertisers, who will likely have a lot of questions. Fewer tweets being seen by users = fewer eyeballs seeing ads. This will have knock on effects beyond stopping whatever scraping Musk objects to.
Having to read tweets on what's going on on Twitter on Techmeme because Twitter won't let me read anything Not sure this a great way to run a product [image]
Even if you thought limiting the reading of tweets was a good idea, the way it's implemented, as an error message because they haven't built anything slicker is just so bad UX. Spitting in users' faces.
This is gonna make a lot of people mad, especially those who bought into his vision to pay $8 a month and who passed whatever checks he put in place to ensure they were “verified” users. [image]
just to be clear the above screenshot isn't fake, i just couldn't get to the original tweet until someone texted it to me because I am rate limited at viewing posts Here's original tweet https://twitter.com/...
Limiting the amount of posts someone can read per day is absolutely absurd. Especially in the middle of NBA free agency.. The timing couldn't be any worse. https://twitter.com/...
gotta hand it to Elon here. we were all joking about how he was gonna implement a paywall on posting but he came up with the even better idea of a paywall on seeing the posts https://twitter.com/...
No viewing tweets without logging in + extreme limiting without a paid account. The era of Twitter as a paid only service is possibly approaching. https://twitter.com/...
sounds like Twitter is doing great if it has to block people who are not signed in and throttle existing accounts just to keep up with the totally ordinary usage that's been going on for years. Place is falling apart and can't happen soon enough frankly. https://twitter.com/...
Easily the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen, in a long line of ridiculousness since Musk took over. They'll stop at nothing trying to get people to pay. Twitter has become unusable as a platform. I said it. 🗑️ https://twitter.com/...
Unless you pay for Twitter you can now only READ 600 posts per day. Even if you pay for Twitter Blue, you can only READ 6000. Well done @elonmusk you killed Twitter. Can't wait to see morons defend this. https://twitter.com/...
This is insane. I look back through tweets, search archives, research things constantly. 600 posts? I hit that use scrolling down through an “advanced search” in five minutes. You have ruined Twitter. It's because you're losing money and don't have the infrastructure, isn't it. h…
I work in social media. I spend 8hr+ a day on Twitter for work. Part of this is directing funds to twitter for various marketing campaigns. This ONLY hurts the users that bring in revenue to twitter. The folks that rely on it for work. It's a sad day on the bird app. https://twit…
It's actually impressive to take control of the most basic social media app to exist and to completely ruin in what... less than a year? https://twitter.com/...
This is just so dumb. A us solution to solve a you problem. I've never heard of a media consumption platform purposely limiting how much of it you can consume, and to once again punish unverified because they didn't want to pay is doubly insulting https://twitter.com/...
To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we've applied the following temporary limits: - Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day - Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day - New unverified accounts to 300/day
