Twitter no longer lets users browse tweets, user profiles, and comment threads on the web without logging in, redirecting Twitter URLs to the sign in page

https://www.theverge.com/... @ahimsa_pdx@disabled.social : You can no longer view tweets if you're not logged in to twitter.  —  You can't even view someone's twitter profile, not even if it's public.  —  Embedding tweets still works, but if you click on the link (eg, to read the full thread) it won't work unless you're logged in. … @juston@mastodon.social : My daughter (who doesn't have a Twitter account) actually alerted me to this change earlier today when I tried to send her a tweet of Jack Black singing “Peaches” at the Hollywood Bowl & she couldn't view it.  If this change is intentional, this was a truly boneheaded decision.  Crikey. … Dare Obasanjo / @carnage4life@mas.to : I noticed this morning that you now have to be logged in to view tweets.  If this is a deliberate change then Elon is more intent on destroying Twitter than anyone could have ever guessed  —  https://www.theverge.com/... Laurie Voss / @seldo@alpaca.gold : Twitter accelerates its decline into irrelevance: https://www.theverge.com/... @aulia@octodon.social : @Techmeme on Twitter gatekeeping tweets, it's taken years to follow Meta's decision to keep IG content behind a wall and it's going to severely diminish whatever's left of Twitter's function as a global townhall and for public information.  —  These increasingly hostile policies are no different to slowly boiling a frog in a pot https://mastodon.social/... @shoq@mastodon.social : I continue to maintain that Musk did us a favor.  His assholery broke the back of the social monopolies, and liberated frustrated developers with new ideas.  But things got off to a rocky start.  A “new” social media didn't quite arrive with the first #twittermigration. … Tiago Lubiana / @lubianat@scholar.social : Now Twitter does not allow users to view tweets without creating an account!  —  Thanks, though, now I don't even get tempted to look at posts on the bird site.  —  The change also breaks archival tools, making tweets effectively much less verifiable.  —  Let's hope these changes wii drive people away from the platform. … Twitter: Elon Musk / @elonmusk : @TimSweeneyEpic Several hundred organizations (maybe more) were scraping Twitter data extremely aggressively, to the point where it was affecting the real user experience. What should we do to stop that? I'm open to ideas. Tim Sweeney / @timsweeneyepic : The internet feels increasingly broken. News sites are paywalled or account walled, Reddit is nag walled, Google search spams ads and SEO to the point of uselessness, and now Twitter is account walled. Web browsing feels horrible now. @titterdaily : NEWS: Twitter's web version no longer allows users to browse without logging in. All urls redirect to the signup page. This is believed to be a measure to make it harder for scrapers to take Twitter's data, like ChatGPT's web browsing plugin has been doing. [image] John Scott-Railton / @jsrailton : NEW: you can no longer view Twitter profiles via web without login. Friction increases for disinformation research. [image] Zoë Schiffer / @zoeschiffer : Twitter is blocking logged out users from browsing tweets in an effort to stop data scrapers. It's happening on web & about to expand to mobile. Interesting bc Musk's first project after taking over was redirecting the Twitter homepage to Explore rather than the sign up screen. https://twitter.com/... Stephen Kent / @stephen_kent89 : when a breach eventually occurs, involving very sensitive information which the companies never wanted to collect....guess who will swoop in to take more control? The same govt that forced them to hold such information. better solution is to be a hands-on parent/guardian. Jordan Starkweather / @jackal27 : If this is intentional, it's the worst decision yet. The only reason this site is so relevant is because the media and content made here can be easily spread (or even embedded) to the rest of the internet. https://twitter.com/... Rasmus Andersson / @rsms : The experience of web browsing has been in a steady decline over the past 10 years. In addition to most websites being 90% ads and cookie banners, many now only work in the latest version of Chrome, “the new MSIE”, or latest Safari (like Figma, which I can't access.) https://twitter.com/... Neville Hobson / @jangles : This may well be temporary as Musk says, but that requires a leap of faith and trust. Meanwhile, ensure you have an effective escape plan, just in case https://twitter.com/... Jay Tholen / @jaytholen : people no longer seeing their peers posting tweets on discord/forums/whatever is gonna make this site seem way less relevant v quickly. one of the few ways that new users find the place. https://twitter.com/... Liz England / @lizardengland : On the plus side maybe tabloidy gamer sites will stop linking to developer tweets like they are news. https://twitter.com/... Sebastian Peitsch / @speitsch : Noticed this yesterday This means you can't get around a block via the website without logging into a sock poppet account https://twitter.com/... M.G. Siegler / @mgsiegler : Just amazing. Every link blog that links to tweets now just link to a dumb interstitial (unless you happen to be logged in to Twitter on that particular browser — which, if you're using, say, an RSS reader, you're not. Or coming from elsewhere, you're not). Stupid. Stupid. Stupid https://twitter.com/... Yuri Sagalov / @yuris : From a global town square to a gated community 😕 https://twitter.com/... Tim Sweeney / @timsweeneyepic : @elonmusk Thwart scraping patterns with infosec engineering, forbid bad forms of scraping in terms of service, add a volume based liquidated damages clause, prominently litigate against large scale commercial abuse. Elon Musk / @elonmusk : @TimSweeneyEpic 1. Scraping is already disallowed by T&C. 2. The scraping orgs dgaf & mask their IPs through proxy servers or through orgs that appear legit. For example, a recent massive scraping operation originating from Oracle IP addresses was just using their servers as a laundromat. 3.... https://twitter.com/... Viktor / @vicorib : This is so so so dumb. Anyone who's ever embedded a tweet on a blog, news site, research journals where a reader ain't logged on twitter will automatically show a blank page now. Sometimes I ask if Elon thinks before doing anything cos it looks like he doesn't 🧐 https://twitter.com/... Tracy Chou / @triketora : if only there were an api so people wouldn't have to scrape, if only https://twitter.com/... Ben Eidelson / @ben8128 : Next we will have Twitter Circles to further limit sharing. https://twitter.com/... Whitney Merrill / @wbm312 : Well this might be the thing that organically kills my twitter use. If I can't share tweets with folks, makes it a lot harder to engage in the same way. They'll see a small bump in signups - but the long term damage will come to bite them. https://twitter.com/... Elon Musk / @elonmusk : @TimSweeneyEpic Lmaooo @peter : Congratulations, @Twitter. You've played yourself. Every embedded tweet on a blog, news site or other experience where a reader isn't explicitly logged into Twitter shows a blank page now. So incredibly dumb. https://twitter.com/... @nash076 : Yay less eyeballs on ads this is the best idea https://www.theverge.com/... The Verge Jess Weatherbed

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter had already narrowed outside access by breaking third-party clients and planning to end free API access; the web login wall extends that retrenchment from developers to casual readers. Third-party app failures and the planned end of free API access established a pattern of reducing unauthenticated and independent routes into the platform.

The change matters because public posts had also functioned as shareable evidence and referral surfaces beyond Twitter itself. Requiring an account turns every profile, thread, and linked post into a controlled entry point rather than an openly viewable web page.

First-order effects

  • People without Twitter accounts can no longer open public tweets, profiles, or full threads from web links; logged-in users become the required audience for that material.
  • Publishers, journalists, researchers, and anyone sharing Twitter URLs lose a reliable way to let external readers inspect the underlying post, even where an embed remains visible.

Second-order effects

  • The login wall reduces Twitter’s off-platform distribution and makes links less useful in articles, chats, and search results, pushing would-be readers either to create accounts or abandon the click.
  • It complements the subsequent temporary reading limits framed as anti-scraping measures, further constraining automated collection and high-volume viewing while raising friction for legitimate monitoring and verification.

Third-order effects

  • If sustained, this shifts Twitter from a publicly indexable conversation layer toward a gated service whose audience, data access, and referral paths are controlled by the operator.
  • The trade-off makes platform trust infrastructure more consequential: anti-scraping controls can protect service capacity, but they can also weaken the public verifiability that made social posts usable as external references.

The trend: This is one data point in the shift from open, linkable social content toward platform-controlled access boundaries designed to limit scraping and govern distribution.
