Genuinely baffled by the unempirical assertion that Community Notes “works.”  Does it?  How do Meta know?  The best available research is pretty mixed on this point.  —  And as they go all-in on an unproven concept, will Meta commit to publicly releasing data so people can actually study this? This is an important story about the ever-shifting Overton window of social media policies.  One push by a single extremist changes the entire aperture of “acceptable” moderation practices.  —  Gift link: wapo.st/3EbFvdb [image]

This is one of those things that seems too crazy to be true, even for Twitter, until you see it inexplicably take 5 seconds for Chrome to receive 650 bytes of data.  [embedded post]

Have been tagged a few times on this one, so let me just say: It's insane to write “we have zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation” while also arbitrarily reinstating accounts that share CSAM.  [embedded post]

I'm sorry, just have to post a big ol' lol about the fact that this guy blew up my life by saying I condone pedophilia, and then he turns around and does this [embedded post]

I testified in front of the House Oversight Committee, under oath, about the extraordinary efforts the US government took to never even appear to take the chance of possibly hinting at demanding the removal of speech.  It simply did not happen.  It's ridiculous to suggest that it did.

Source: the US State Department cancels meetings with Meta about the 2024 election, one day after a judge limited Biden officials' contact with tech companies

A Louisiana federal court's order limiting the Biden administration's communications with tech firms already is disrupting efforts to fight misinformation.

There is so much wrong with this decision — not least of all that it will make us less secure going into the 2024 elections — but the most glaring bit is the theory that tech companies were somehow “coerced” to take action simply by virtue of having a meeting.  That's just... not how any of this works. …
