How are you going to return to the U.S. App Store when you still don't have a developer account? Did I miss the part where the ruling requires Apple to allow Epic back? This is a huge and humiliating loss for Apple, but they lost here to the law (and common sense), not to Epic

Tim Sweeney says Epic plans to submit Fortnite to the US iOS App Store next week and “puts forth a peace proposal” to end all litigation over App Store policies

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney has announced that the company will submit Fortnite to the iOS App Store in the U.S. next week.

A US judge rules that Apple violated a 2021 court order to open the App Store to third-party payment options, and refers the case for a criminal investigation

Gonzalez Rogers also referred the case to federal prosecutors to investigate whether Apple committed criminal contempt of court for flouting her 2021 ruling.

Siri with Apple Intelligence is a massive regression from the old Siri, which recognized its limitations and provided a list of search links to answer a query

Writing about the current state of Apple Intelligence yesterday, I mentioned how utterly stupid and laughably wrong Siri is when asked …

@mgsiegler Pregame show was a mess, but the game broadcasts have been great. Better camera and sound than Amazon, and Amazon has had TNF for years now.

Netflix's first livestream of NFL games avoided major buffering and freezing issues that plagued the Tyson-Paul fight for the most part, after early glitches

I suspect they might have been compressing the audio track to prevent video buffering. Leo S / @yeeleo15 : Streaming to 10-15 million a lot different than the 60 million they claim...

Docs: OpenAI had $300M in monthly revenue in August, up 1,700% since early 2023, 350M MAUs in June, and expects ~$3.7B in annual sales but $5B in losses in 2024

As the company looks for more outside investors, documents reviewed by The New York Times show consumer fascination with ChatGPT and a serious need for more cash.

It's absurd to argue that tech companies filtering all future product ideas through government regulatory bodies would make for a good system.  And what if the answer is “No”?  And even if the answer is “Yes” wouldn't it mean operating at the speed of EU bureaucracy?  Of course Apple — which considers secrecy a marketing advantage — doesn't want to engage with that.

Apple will withhold the release of Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring, and more in the EU this year, citing concerns about DMA's interoperability requirements

“This is not spite.  Spite would be saying these features will never come to the EU while the DMA remains in place.  But a delayed rollout is the only rational response to the DMA: extreme caution in the face of the law's by-design uncertainty and severe penalties.” https://daringfireball.net/...

It's not the privacy it's the interop mandates. iPhone Mirroring only works with Apple's own desktop computer.  SharePlay Screen Sharing and drawing only works between Apple devices.  The DMA could be read as demanding that this is all self-preferencing and needs to be opened to competitors.  And that would be the privacy/security problem.

Apple's reversal on RCS wasn't forced by the EU, but likely by China, whose government began codifying in 2023 a requirement for new 5G devices to support RCS

We've had pretty obvious hints since early September that iMessage and Bing would be considered exempt from “gatekeeper” status, and thus exempt from the DMA.
