Apple plans to adopt the GSM's RCS messaging standard by releasing a software update “later next year”, bringing iMessage-style features to cross-platform texts

In a surprising move, Apple has announced today that it will adopt the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard.

I'm really torn on this.  On one level it would be nice to be out of the green bubble penalty box, but on another I'd miss embarrassing my iPhone-using family.
  • @danseifert Dan Seifert on threads
“this is only a problem in the US” betrays a complete lack of empathy for the 10s or 100s of millions of people it does affect and i truly cannot stand that reply guy response
  • @karissabe Karissa on threads
And everyone saying that RCS support doesn't matter bc most people (globally) use WhatsApp or other apps, clearly don't have friends and relatives (especially older ones who are adverse to new apps) who use Android.  For some of us, the busted green bubbles are a daily pain point

This smells like a negotiation tactic to me — Apple would rather support RCS than be forced to open up iMessage  —  That being said...Apple's definitely not happy about it 😅 Wild! https://www.theverge.com/...

I fully expect Apple to implement the minimum on the RCS spec.  There will still be different colored bubbles.  I do not expect them to adopt the encryption stuff Google did (using Signal's libraries fwiw) or to go out of their way to make RCS anything other than SMS that you are…

Everybody should have secure and modern messaging without worrying what kind of phone they're texting to. So glad to see Apple joining our ongoing work with the GSMA on RCS to make texting better for all! 🙏 https://www.cnn.com/...

NEW: Apple says RCS is coming to iOS in '24: “We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”

Great decision! Good for consumers, competition, and innovation. Hats off to the EU, telcos, Google, and most of all to Apple. 🎩
  • @gartenberg Michael Gartenberg on x
There's no reason Apple couldn't adopt RCS and create a “blue bubble” standard. It's only kids and teens that care about blue bubbles, why is Apple fostering divisiveness among families as well as continuing to shame those who simply can't afford an iPhone?
  • @maxwinebach Max Weinbach on x
I want to make something clear to everyone: Apple did not decide to adopt RCS just because of Nothing Chat. It happened to be the last day for plans for the EU's DMA The decisions around adopting standards like this don't happen overnight.
  • @gartenberg Michael Gartenberg on x
@stevesi I could see a scenario where messages supports MMS/RCS and iMessage spins off into an iMessage FaceTime App that is Apple only. Apple might confidant that its users will still use their protocols on their eco system while they technically support RCS.
  • @ianzelbo Ian Zelbo on x
How much you wanna bet RCS bubbles are still gonna be green
  • @mike_wuerthele Mike Wuerthele on x
That was a very quick, and unsurprising, turnaround. It's foolish to think that Apple gives a single damn about what any other company does. It cares about regulation. [image]
  • @getpeid Carl Pei on x
@mrtechsense Yeah while this is great, it doesn't solve the blue bubble vs. green bubble issue
  • @phhusson Husson Pierre-Hugues on x
I love this middle finger to Google. “Messages by Google” is not RCS, and this communication from Apple makes it clear by mentioning the actual RCS standard multiple time. Apple RCS will be standard but not compatible with “Messages by Google”
  • @phhusson Husson Pierre-Hugues on x
Apple calling it “RCS Universal Profile” shows that they want to implement the actual protocol, where SMS are routed by the carrier, unlike “Messages by Google” routing them through Google server under the Patriot Act. (as an European that matters to me)
  • @greengart Avi Greengart on x
Apple adopting RCS in 2024 — before regulators force the issue — is a smart move. I expect that in heavy iPhone markets like the U.S., iMessage will remain predominant, and social pressure among teens for iPhones will be undiminished.
  • @ishanagarwal24 Ishan Agarwal on x
Nothing went through ALL that effort for Nothing Chats to turn Android users into blue bubbles & Apple just announced RCS support to just make it better for green bubbles anyways instead of shutting them down 😭 Literally the most unexpected things this week lol [image]
  • @android @android on x
We believe everyone deserves to communicate inclusively no matter what phone they have. This is one huge step closer to doing that. Excited for Apple to embrace RCS, the modern industry standard, to help make messaging better for everyone. 💚💙 https://www.cnet.com/...
  • @ianzelbo Ian Zelbo on x
While USB-C and RCS are universal wins for users, it worries me how much power the EU has
  • @ishanagarwal24 Ishan Agarwal on x
2023-2024 is really something in the Apple land. - USB-C coming to iPhones with iPhone 15 series. - Messages app supporting RCS alongside iMessage. I wonder if it's the EU pressure or was just gonna happen anyway. #Apple [image]
  • @nexusben Ben Schoon on x
Nothing announced an iMessage app and two days later Apple adopted RCS. Coincidence? Yes, and it's foolish to pretend otherwise. https://9to5google.com/...

@9to5mac @ChanceHMiller In the last 3 years, the EU has pushed more innovation into Apple than Apple's own engineering team. https://twitter.com/...

The ends that people will go to not to use WhatsApp or Signal astonish me.
  • @gadgetsboy Tomi on x
Since Apple is supporting things...can they make Airdrop work cross-platform too, thanks #imessage
  • @gartenberg Michael Gartenberg on x
@stevesi Sounds like those are the weasel words. Wouldn't surprise me if there are two separate apps
  • @stevesi Steven Sinofsky on x
@Gartenberg A lot would break. They could have SMS still with Messages and RCS with a separate app. But that would only last a short time because carriers want to move to RCS for everything and position it as SMS+more stuff.
  • @mkbhd Marques Brownlee on x
Apple adding RCS support won't necessarily end green vs blue bubbles. They can still absolutely treat RCS messages differently vs iMessage... BUT it does help with encryption and higher file size support between Android and iPhones 👍🏾
  • @benwood Ben Wood on x
Big news in mobile messaging. Apple adopting RCS & opening up messaging. EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) has been key factor in this decision. @CCSInsight has repeatedly predicted DMA would drive change in a similar manner to GDPR (and USB-C legislation). https://9to5mac.com/...

WOW. Apple says RCS is coming to iOS in 2024. Green bubbles may no longer be the worst! To be clear, iMessage still stays Apple only. “This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”

@Techmeme @ChanceHMiller For whatever reason, this doesn't seem like as big a deal as it was 5 years ago. iMessages aren't going anywhere, are still the default, and will still be exclusive to iOS devices.

Hell freezing over? What makes this even more surprising is that Apple doesn't want iMessage to be subjected to the EU's DMA rules. Apple may have some killer feature(s) coming up that will guarantee strong network effects even with greater RCS-based interoperability. We'll see.

BREAKING: Holy crap.  Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone next year!  I never thought they'd do this, but it appears that political pressure (the only strategy that I think would have worked), is pushing them to adopt it before they're forced to do other things according to the E…
