Apple plans to adopt the GSM's RCS messaging standard by releasing a software update “later next year”, bringing iMessage-style features to cross-platform texts

Today I'm excited to share that we're working with AT&T to accelerate adoption of the RCS standard, and that AT&T's default Android messaging will now be via the Jibe platform, so their users will get the latest RCS features instantly.

Google SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer says AT&T's default Android messaging will now use the Jibe platform, “so their users will get the latest RCS features instantly”

The carrier is the first to get advanced text message features from Google's platform, rather than just using its Messages app.

At I/O, we announced more than 800M people are currently using RCS, and we expect to hit 1B by the end of the year. Adopting modern messaging standards helps bring us all closer together and improves user privacy.

Google SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer says by not supporting RCS in iMessage, Apple is “holding back” the industry and UX for not just Android but its own customers

We're not asking Apple to make iMessage available on Android. We're asking Apple to support the industry standard for modern messaging (RCS) in iMessage, just as they support the older SMS / MMS standards.
