Apple Card

JPMorgan is set to replace Goldman Sachs as Apple Card issuer in a two-year transition, closing the partnership that powered its expansion into savings.

Who they are

Apple Card is Apple’s U.S. consumer credit-card product, tied to the iPhone and Wallet ecosystem and built with Goldman Sachs as issuer and Mastercard as its payment network. Coverage places it within Apple’s broader push to turn payments, rewards and savings features into services attached to its devices.

The recent arc

Coverage peaked again in 2023 as Apple Card expanded beyond a card product: Apple rolled out Apple Pay Later in March, launched the Goldman-backed Apple Card Savings account in April, and said in August that the account had surpassed $10 billion in deposits. Reporting also tracked possible international expansion, including talks to launch the card in India, while the product’s earlier U.S. rollout and cashback offers remained the baseline for comparisons.

The story then shifted from feature growth to partner and operating risk. Reports in late 2023 cast Chase Bank as a possible Goldman replacement, Apple resolved a Wallet-related outage in December, and the CFPB said in October 2024 that Apple and Goldman would pay $89 million after its Apple Card investigation. The decisive development came in January 2026, when Apple said JPMorgan Chase would take over issuance from Goldman Sachs through an expected two-year transition.

The tension

The central tension is Apple’s desire to own the customer-facing financial experience while relying on bank and network partners to carry the credit and regulatory burden. The Apple-Goldman relationship reportedly soured, with reports also pointing to loss-rate concerns; JPMorgan’s incoming role resolves the issuer question but leaves competition among Mastercard, Visa and American Express for the payment-network role in view.

Why it matters

If the JPMorgan transition proceeds as described, Apple Card could retain its place in Apple’s Wallet and services strategy while being supported by a different banking partner. But the CFPB action, service outage and reported friction with Goldman show that scale in consumer finance brings operational, compliance and credit-management constraints that Apple cannot fully abstract away; the transition’s execution will determine whether the product’s savings-and-payments expansion regains the narrative.

Apple Card has appeared in 47 articles since 2019-03. Coverage peaked in 2023Q3 with 5 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Apple, Goldman Sachs, iPhone, Goldman.
