TikTok restores its service in the US, thanking Donald Trump for “the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties”

The company said this afternoon that it is “in the process of restoring service” and thanked President-elect Trump for …

It's nearly impossible to parse in his version of English but what it *sounds* like he's suggesting is that he wants the US *government* to split any purchase with a US acquiring company. Which is just perfect. What could possibly go wrong?

After all the years of GOP complaints about the Biden administration getting involved in social media moderation the solution here is for the federal government to **own** half of a platform alongside a Chinese company?

2/2 not sure how an EO can legally trump a law but this might buy time and Trump is at least getting caught trying The idea of getting the US govt as an owner of a social media app is ... different

If Trump issues an EO to basically overturn the TikTok ban law, what's to stop him from doing the same with most any other law? Not a rhetorical question. No matter how one feels about TikTok, there seem to be some major constitutional issues at play here.

TikTok tucking itself in with Trump. Twitter under control of the White House. Facebook making major changes to placate MAGA, doing PR campaign to align w Trump. Does everyone not see what's happening here and how terrifying this is. [image]

lol did Apple just kill the “TikTok” keyword? Cause obviously there's like a million other apps that should be showing up. It does appear that the app page itself is gone though. [image]

The TikTok app is still not available for new downloads on App Stores
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
The more I think about it I'd be surprised if TikTok becomes downloadable again from the App Store imminently - despite the app working again. An executive order isn't an end all be all and Apple has a lot to lose here by restoring it potentially early.

Do NOT update TestFlight - Apple has just released an emergency update (3.7.1) which will block you from downloading the TikTok beta. [image]

Apple probably should have just waited a bit to publish this pretty much now outdated article. The big question now: will TikTok return to the App Store before an executive order is signed? Anyone's guess but I don't see why Apple would risk fines over hours.

Apple just blocked Americans from installing Tik Tok on iOS. If iOS were an open platform, everyone would be free to download it from the web and connect to international servers through VPN. But Apple monopolizes US iOS app distribution and intentionally makes this impossible.

Apple posted a support document on the TikTok ban. Have never seen one of these before for an app removal. But then again this is all pretty unprecedented. All this for a 48 hour ban. https://support.apple.com/...

Apple, unlike 99% of media, isn't repeating the lie that there is a TikTok ban.  TikTok would be fully functional if ByteDance chose to divest.  But “ban” is sexier than “didn't divest.”  As SCOTUS said unanimously, foreign nations don't have free speech rights.  When does SCOTUS…
