“cyber-exploit components” is conspicuously not “exploits”, and there's not a lot of high-end technologies someone would sell techniques as components for.  The main (and most expensive) one is iOS.

A former L3Harris executive pleads guilty in a US district court to selling eight zero-day exploits to a Russian broker in exchange for millions of dollars

* “at least eight sensitive and protected cyber-exploit components” illegally sold to “a Russian cyber-tools broker” (for ~$1.3m).  Obviously at a huge discount, bc super illegal  ...

We also have a lower-bound value on the value of those techniques if you disclosed to Apple.  A zero-click exploit chain (notably: not components, and not just any exploit chain) is worth $2m as of a few weeks ago, and $1m from Apple before then.

In this story we have:  —  * “at least eight sensitive and protected cyber-exploit components” illegally sold to “a Russian cyber-tools broker” (for ~$1.3m).  Obviously at a huge discount, bc super illegal  —  But separately “[AUSA Pirro] said Williams' conduct caused over $35 million in losses” to L3Harris

So this story is super duper interesting for a whole ton of reasons, but one big one is its a very rare glimpse into the private valuation of high-end exploits held by major defense contractors  —  bsky.app/profile/lega...  [embedded post]

sfaict this one doesn't even bother with a pretence of statutory cover for it.  It's just “I won't enforce it for 75 days”.  Going to be some interesting conversations in the GC's offices at Apple and Google for sure

It's kind of fascinating—tho perhaps in a somewhat bleak way—that Congress has been so dysfunctional for such a long time that core institutions (even including the other branches) just no longer take seriously the idea that Congress is a functional legislature

An odd thing with the TikTok punditry is how there's this too-cute rhetorical swap where TikTok is on the one hand just cat videos and silly dances, and so there is no harm if USG closes it, and once that's asserted, it is suddenly now the primary news source of youth, so imperative must be closed

Not the main thing here, but when real-life Einstein came to America, his visa was personally protested by organizations including the Women's Patriot Organization movement.  If he were alive today, he'd as likely arrive under a refugee visa (or J-1) than under an O-1 [embedded post]
