A few years ago when my friends and I started (re)imagining what a location-aware social experience of the future might look like, it was with the assumption that Apple might ship AR glasses in the imminent future.  Really impressive to watch Meta get there first.

Super bummed about the wind down of the @foursquare city guide.  I know we can moan a lot about how the internet used to be fun and this and that, but there's certainly a truth to it.  Our quest for efficiency has robbed us of some joy.  —  I'm still convinced there are successful products to be made that connect people IRL, but it is a tough road to walk. …

FWIW today I think Meta is doing a better job here wrt AI than most.  But it's an arms race and other parties are definitely going straight to the bottom.

The Pixel 9's AI features have made creating realistic and believable fake photos trivial, and Google's safeguards are astonishingly inadequate

Our basic assumptions about photos capturing reality are about to go up in smoke.  —  Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge; AI-altered images made with Google's Magic Editor.

There were a number of decisions made at Facebook about Sharing and Privacy defaults over a decade ago where PMs (including myself) said things like... “But no one would ever do that.”  “Most people are good people and won't behave that way.”  “Well, people already do that in other ways, this just makes it easier.  But it's no different.”  My gut tells me PMs are saying similar things about AI and generative imagery now, and in a decade we're gonna know better.

TikTok is a risk and should be divested to a domestic company.  Also... Kids are smarter than you think they are and are less likely to be influenced by the “propaganda” they find on CCP TikTok than your parents were by US-based F*x News.  Ok.  There's my hot take for the evening.

News media is doing a really horrible job covering this.  There's not a bank in this universe that will give him a loan against that stock, nor can he sell it (it's locked up for six months without a waiver), and if he were to try to sell that much stock, the value would collapse almost instantly (who's buying if he's getting out?). …

We can hem and haw all day about whether or not banning TikTok is smart, politically expedient, or useful in any way, but... If the US banned TikTok there would literally be a week of teeth-gnashing, then everyone would acclimate to Reels on IG, and that would be that.  It would suck for influencers and some small businesses, but ppl would move on pretty quickly.
