Apple starts selling the Vision Pro in the US; Tim Cook compares Vision Pro debut to the birth of Mac, iPod, and iPhone in a memo to employees

Apple Inc. faithful lined up at its US stores on Friday to pick up the first Vision Pro headsets, ushering in what the company calls “the era of spatial computing.”

Say what you will about the Apple Vision Pro, but VisionOS is a masterpiece.  It's visually stunning, it's understanding of 3D space appears to be impeccable (with shadows on the floor under it!), and the hand occlusion is admittedly imperfect but is really solid at points. …

Vision Pro isn't bad but not quite “there” - The 6dof tracking itself is perfect.  - Passthrough needs another generation - UX is incredible and shows how UI with eye tracking done well is a big friction fix - No room setup is huge The most compelling part for me has been how hig…

AppleVisionPro quick review.  - FOV is no problem.  I'm quickly immersed - I noticed a tiny bit of a binoculars effect/warping around the edges at first.  - Passthrough is not sharp, not as sharp as the rendered graphics, which are super good (compared to the Quest 2 I was using)…

crazy engineering: when the Vision Pro has a total system crash, the camera pass through keeps working (!).  If it's extreme, it will prompt that you have 30 seconds before it goes dark.  Really impressive.

Pointless but fun (for me) shopping experiment: I clicked on every Vision Pro upgrade and add-on I could find on Apple's website.  My cart totaled $5,976.09.  (Shipping was free, though.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...

The engineering and design that went into this hardware is unmatched in the market.  While this may seem silly now, this technology, along with innovative developers and creators, will drive the next generation of computing.  This is just the beginning... Apple Vision Pro

The Mac virtual desktop in the Vision Pro is some magic shit.  A 4K widescreen display floating in space, full resolution, no latency.  That's some engineering.

Except that the Quest isn't really working.  Meta's strategy is to start with the right price and work toward the right device, building an ecosyem as It goes.  Apple is starting with (almost) the right device and working towards the right price.

And there is simply the “Apple” factor.  I'm sure if I ask 10 people about the “Meta Quest”, the majority will not know who it's from or have any sort of perception of it out of the gate.
  • @hellodavidryan David on threads
Talking to Meta engineers on that side of things, they don't care.  They do shake their head at Apple's BOM for the AVP, and have choice opinions about the head strap and glass, but even knowing the rushed errors in this unit, they're focusing on their own roadmap.
  • @mgsiegler M.G. Siegler on threads
History is a graveyard of products that died saying “but we did it first!”.  Hopefully it's just the fans saying this and nothing Meta actually cares about.  Because literally no one cares.
  • @yannivasiliou Yanni Vasiliou on threads
Vision pro, while is technologically impressive, remains a flawed product at a extremely high price.  There is no market for it now, and at this form there won't be a market five years from now.  Meta's Quest while it has many of the fundamental problems of the Vision Pro, is muc…

100%.  Meta needs to move up the experience and ecosystem ladder faster than Apple can get its price down.  Not impossible but definitely a challenge.
