    Looks totally normal. Totally normal.
  • @josethevrtech @josethevrtech on x
Dual-chip architecture is smart and respectful of both physics and devs. There's just no way to deliver a genuinely performant, usable, and future-proof hardware component without the additional compute. Yes, it increases the price, but it also makes the device actually usable.

@Heaney555 @TinaDebove FYI Snap claimed 3000 patents or something on this, so I'm wondering if they are also setting themselves as an acquisition target to get all these XR related patents, just like Google had to buy Motorola to get a bunch of smartphone patents?
  • @rjdoesvr @rjdoesvr on x
Props to them for finally putting something out, and getting arguably the closest to a viable consumer form factor too. The price and platform are still too ugly but those can change... if this half of Snap doesnt implode before they get a chance.

I do not see the vision on AI glasses. At all. I think the tech companies are gaslighting us into thinking we need some new AI-wearable. We do not. The phone is fine and will be at the center of AI usecases. I really don't get the glasses hype.

The Holodeck glasses are here from Snap, but aren't affordable for most people. $2,195. I just bought a $1,500 pair of ZeroG glasses https://www.zerogeyewear.com/ to help me see reality better. The best my optometrist offers. With Zeiss lenses. Yeah, I could have bought a pair of

Specs have dual Snapdragon processors! Wonder if this will become more common on glasses, dual chip. Makes a ton of sense. [image]

Finally, standalone true AR glasses are available to preorder. A milestone moment for the XR industry. We now officially live in the future.

Even though they're pretty thick and massive, I'm intrigued by the dual-chip design! Really curious to see what these things can do.

@Cacaguya Seems like they're targeting “early adopting consumers” rather than just developers this time Definitely not mass consumer, imo

Why do they keep thinking this time we're gonna like this
  • @heaney555 David Heaney on x
@SkarredGhost I've been saying for years that people have wildly unrealistic expectations for how much true AR glasses would cost.
  • @skarredghost @skarredghost on x
So, Specs have been announced! They seem cool and I love the attention to developers and creators. But $2200 is a bit too much to have any kind of mass adoption. I hoped for half that price. Thoughts? [image]

They look very nice though and the entire industry should be more than delighted we now have standalone everyday AR 6DOF glasses in the lineup Probably won't buy them since I don't think I can make any significant business with it but can't wait to try!

The new Snapchat Specs are still absurd and goofy but shoutout Snapchat for still going for it. All of these are iterative steps to the AR future. When the tech finally gets there, people are going to be rocked. [image]
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
Spiegel called the Specs both “very, very” wearable and highly capable, which he said gives Snap an opportunity “in a market that's focused either on very large and clunky headsets that are super capable or very lightweight glasses that don't really do much.”
  • @barrsm Steve Barr on x
@UploadVR After using a HL2, IMO that FOV isn't enough for consumer use. Also they don't seem to have a plan for iOS or Android integration, so the glasses seem to be a little AR island.

It is crazy that meta glasses are such a hit while snapchat's spectacles beat them to market by years. All they had to do was partner with Ray-Ban so they dont look stupid, and snapchat doubled down on making them ugly af again. [image]
