Microsoft’s 2026 E7 bundle raised Office-and-Copilot pricing about 65%, while investor and regulatory scrutiny sharpened around the AI-led strategy.

Who they are

Office is Microsoft’s productivity-software suite and a central distribution layer for the company’s commercial cloud and AI offerings. Coverage repeatedly places its apps, including Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, at the center of Microsoft 365 Copilot launches, enterprise packaging, platform partnerships, and the company’s Productivity and Business Processes business.

The recent arc

Recent coverage has shifted from Copilot’s introduction inside Office apps to the economics and adoption of that integration. Microsoft announced Microsoft 365 Copilot with GPT-4 for Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word and other Office apps in 2023, set a $30-per-user monthly business price, and later launched the E7 package combining Office tools and Copilot for $99 per user per month, a roughly 65% increase. Bloomberg reported that about 3% of Microsoft’s more than 450 million business users were also paying for Copilot in January.

The latest stories also broaden the frame from product rollout to execution risk. TCI cut almost all of its $8 billion Microsoft stake, citing AI risks primarily tied to Office and secondarily Azure; Bloomberg reported an AI-powered agent finding previously unknown Office vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, Microsoft said it would use Anthropic models for some Office 365 AI features after finding Claude Sonnet 4 stronger than OpenAI’s GPT-5 on some tasks.

The tension

Coverage circles a difficult balance: Microsoft is trying to turn Office’s installed enterprise base into a higher-priced Copilot business while preserving choice, trust and competitive neutrality. The EU’s Teams-bundling case led to commitments to offer Office without Teams in Europe for seven years, and Microsoft’s reported use of Anthropic alongside OpenAI suggests the Office AI stack is not settled even as Copilot remains the commercial centerpiece.

Why it matters

Office is where Microsoft can test whether generative AI becomes a broadly paid workplace capability rather than an add-on for a small share of customers. If E7 and related bundles gain traction, Office could deepen Microsoft’s control over enterprise AI distribution; if pricing, security concerns, model performance, or regulatory constraints limit uptake, the strategy’s promised leverage across Microsoft 365 and Azure becomes less certain.

Office has appeared in 116 articles since 2014-12. Coverage peaked in 2025Q3 with 4 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Microsoft, Windows, PowerPoint, Excel.
