Apple Pay

In February 2026, Apple was reported to be negotiating with Visa, Mastercard and major Indian banks for an Apple Pay launch around mid-2026.

Who they are

Apple Pay is Apple’s digital-wallet and payment service, closely tied to the iPhone, NFC and Apple’s broader Services business. In coverage, it appears both as a consumer payments product and as part of the infrastructure through which Apple connects card networks, banks, developers and merchants.

The recent arc

Recent coverage shifted from product expansion and adjacent financial features toward regulatory and platform questions. The late-2024 concentration was driven by Apple’s decision to end the US Apple Pay Later buy-now-pay-later service and by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s move to supervise large digital-wallet providers including Apple Pay, Google Pay and Venmo more like banks. NetChoice and TechNet then challenged that CFPB approach in January 2025. Apple also marked Apple Pay’s 10th anniversary and, with iOS 18.1, said developers could use the iPhone Secure Element for NFC transactions separately from Apple Pay.

By 2025 and early 2026, Apple Pay featured more often as a component of Apple Services results, alongside the App Store, Apple TV, Apple Music and iCloud, while payments interoperability broadened around it. Cash App added Apple Pay and Google Pay for Pools contributions, and Wyoming’s FRNT stablecoin was described as usable through Rain-issued Visa cards and payment rails including Apple Pay. The latest reported development is Apple’s talks with Visa, Mastercard, ICICI, HDFC and Axis on a prospective India launch.

The tension

Coverage centers on the trade-off between Apple Pay’s control of iPhone payment hardware and its expanding role in a regulated payments market. Apple faces direct wallet rivals such as Google Pay, PayPal and Venmo, while the CFPB’s oversight effort and Apple’s opening of Secure Element NFC access put pressure on the degree to which Apple can retain a distinct gatekeeper role between iPhone users, developers, banks and card networks.

Why it matters

If the India plans proceed and Apple continues embedding Apple Pay in its Services ecosystem, the service could become a larger strategic link between Apple’s device base and financial partners rather than merely a checkout feature. But its trajectory will depend on how regulators treat large wallets, how developers use newly available NFC access, and whether card networks and local banks support Apple’s terms in new markets.

Apple Pay has appeared in 94 articles since 2014-12. Coverage peaked in 2024Q4 with 5 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Apple, iPhone, NFC, PayPal.
