I hadn't realised SharePlay wasn't coming in the initial OS releases. Well, that's a day one feature idea out the window... https://twitter.com/...

Oh, Apple pulls SharePlay late in the beta cycle. Props for that, better than shipping it wonky. https://twitter.com/...

We did it everyone: Safari in iOS 15 beta 6 features a new address bar at the bottom that sits below page content. A toolbar with buttons is back. And we can put the address bar back at the top again 🎉 https://twitter.com/...

As much as Apple pretends otherwise, they also listen to users. If a load of normal people switch the Tabs setting to the old design when 15.0 drops, there's a chance they would give up on bottom bar altogether and the setting disappears during the 15.x cycle.

8/ Here's the 2 problems that arise. First, from an engineering perspective the code has these two states. Everything needs to be tested against these two states. Easy to see a bunch of ways that this impacts web site design too because now sites have different available pixels.

The new Safari in iOS 15 looks PERFECT! So glad Apple listened and reverted back to a more logical and familiar UX. Hopefully it sticks for public release. https://twitter.com/...

If the Safari beta 6 bottom bar design was like that from beta 1, the backlash would have been so small and the top address bar certainly wouldn't have become an option.

PS/ I know this is controversial on twitter esp b/c here are the tiny %age of people who use options. But please at least consider the real engineering challenges that happen by introducing modalities—or just blast me for hating choice. I get the visceral reaction. Honest. 🙏//

The “gyrations” through Apple's beta cycle since WWDC when it comes to Safari UX are fascinating—some might even say not very “Apple-like”. Changing is fine. But where the design seems to be ending up is suboptimal for a platform, IMO. Here's why, but not why one might think /1 h…

Using Safari on iOS 15 beta 6 feels much more than the crisis averted moment for the browser's redesign. it's taking the better designed concepts like the Tab Groups and the Bottom Tab Bar with its gestures and making some sane UI Design choices. That's all I wanted honestly.

9/ This is not just a pain or an easy to absorb cost, but this compounds exponentially. Every new feature now has to consider this modality. Pretty soon combinatorics of options like this across a platform add up. And remember, this was kind of an objection handler for techies.

I agree it is not a great equilibrium. My read on this is: time's up, beta 6 is when the codebase is basically frozen aside from bug fixes. So, Apple punted and was like well I guess we have to offer the old design to keep people happy for the time being. https://twitter.com/...

okay cute but it bugs me there's an option to show the address bar at the top. not because of the design, but because doesn't Apple pride itself on being able to make these types of UI decisions for us? https://twitter.com/...

Apple is giving users a choice?! Wow. New iOS 15 Beta 6 brings back the search/URL bar at the top if you want the old UI and can't get used to the Tab Bar at the bottom which enabled fast switching between tabs. I don't know what I want haha. Switch back or no? #iOS15 https://twi…

7/ When Office 97 introduced the scroll wheel on mice (invented by an Excel PM) the original idea was to zoom w/ the wheel. But Word and browsing thought scrolling was best. Testing. Debates. More tests. Scrolling was right. Still we shipped an option. No one used it. https://twi…

Simultaneously changing this setting to “Single Tab” with great vigor and pouring one out for the Safari team, which now appears to be maintaining two massively different sets of very custom UI code for this screen. https://twitter.com/...

This ain't so far off from the Maps-based idea I posted about a few months ago, which makes me happy 😀 Seriously though, the Safari team needs a vacation after this summer, it's been nuts for them, I'm sure. https://twitter.com/...

6/ So the argument goes that for power users options are great. They can find them and tweak them. Then they are back to being fully productive and most people don't notice. But this creates a “fork” in the evolution of the product. That is bad for everyone.

I'm glad Apple is now offering an option to revert to the old Safari address bar in iOS 15, but this idea of Apple offering two different UIs as a setting is un-Apple like, I think.
