Apple releases iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1 with SharePlay, iPhone 13 ProRes video capture, a toggle for automatic macro mode, vaccine cards in Wallet, and more

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple had previewed SharePlay alongside FaceTime upgrades including spatial audio, voice isolation and web access in its iOS 15 FaceTime plans, while the public-beta coverage positioned it as part of a broader iOS and iPadOS redesign. The release turns that previewed shared-media feature into a shipping capability.

Apple has also used point releases to extend device media features: iOS 14.1 added 10-bit HDR playback and editing ahead of the iPhone 12 launch. Adding ProRes capture continues that coupling of iPhone hardware and operating-system video tools.

First-order effects

  • iPhone 13 Pro owners can now capture ProRes video and manually control automatic macro behavior, while Apple device users gain SharePlay and Wallet vaccine cards through the OS update.
  • Apple’s FaceTime offering now includes the previously announced SharePlay experience across the updated iOS and iPadOS platforms.

Second-order effects

  • ProRes capture raises the importance of storage, transfer and editing workflows for iPhone 13 Pro users, extending Apple’s earlier move to support HDR video editing in Photos.
  • SharePlay makes FaceTime a venue for synchronized video and music sessions, giving Apple a deeper role in how users experience media together rather than only how they communicate.

Third-order effects

  • Apple’s release pattern points to the operating system as the mechanism for activating and refining premium device capabilities after launch, rather than treating hardware features as fixed at shipment.
  • If this pattern persists, Apple’s platform differentiation will increasingly combine communications features, media-production tools and Wallet-based personal records in recurring software updates.

The trend: Apple is using OS releases to bind new iPhone capabilities and shared-service features more tightly into its device ecosystem.

iOS 15.1 just dropped, which lights up ProRes video. Fun fact: The ENTIRE Rivian R1T video is shot with iPhone 13 Pro ProRes 4K. Some people noticed. Some didn't. Either way, I was impressed, and it made the 24 hours with the truck VERY easy to shoot! https://www.youtube.com/... …

iOS 15.1 is out and that brings SharePlay which means your family members can now share their iPhone's screen with you over FaceTime. Tech help hallelujah.

@MKBHD How long was the process of getting the footage from the phone? Did you airdrop or cable it?

@Caramalameet @MKBHD The fact that i can use one macbook charger for mac , s21+ and buds pro but not iphone is bizarre. That too fast charge. Customers should demand it now if we want it by 2030.

Happy to announce that as soon as my iPhone 13 Pro finishes updating to iOS 15.1 I will be available for hire as a cinematographer shooting Professional Res.

Hey fellow Albertans! Between Alberta Health fixing their system and Apple dropping a new iPhone update today, you can add your vaccine record to your phone lock-screen. Step one: open your camera app and point at the code. Follow the prompt to add to Health https://twitter.com/.…
