Meta debuts the $500 Quest 3, featuring a 30% higher resolution than the Quest 2, double the processing power, new lenses, a thinner design, and new controllers

- New mixed-reality headset to start at $500, a $200 increase  — Apple to launch rival device, Vision Pro, early next year

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

me and the Quest 2 did not have a good relationship, but Quest 3 looks great? augments are particularly cool and are something I had hoped would be a major part of visionOS - but that did not pan out
  • @karissabe Karissa on threads
My preview of Meta Connect: yes, we'll see the Meta Quest 3 (and likely some new smart glasses) but I suspect Meta intends to make AI a big part of this year's narrative rather than just the “metaverse” https://www.engadget.com/...
  • @stroughtonsmith … Steve Troughton-Smith on mastodon
Honestly at this point I feel like I'll be happier with a decade of Meta Quest headsets for the same combined price as a single Vision Pro, until Apple figures this stuff out.  I think the option of hand controllers is essential, at the very least.  I don't for a second think App…

Why are people cheering about putting virtual photo frames into your living room while wearing a Quest 3 — why not just buy a simple digital photo frame that doesn't need a headset? #MetaConnect2023
  • @nimazeighami Nima Zeighami on x
I think offering half a Vision Pro (less than half the processing power, about half the resolution) for 1/7th of the price with Quest 3 is an INCREDIBLY attractive offering from Facebook. Apple has to make up the gap in software and utility or it'll be tough to compete.
  • @munster_gene Gene Munster on x
Big picture: Meta and Apple share the same vision that the physical world will merge with the digital world. Meta calls it the metaverse, Apple spatial computing. While Meta's products, namely Quest 3, are much more affordable than Apple's Vision Pro, you get what you pay for.
  • @slhamlet Wagner James Au on x
Here's my take on the Quest 3 launch announcement, which mentions VR once - and “mixed reality” FIVE times. But Pokemon Go aside, there's little proof of a mass market of consumers who actually want mixed reality — let alone strapping it to their face. https://nwn.blogs.com/...
  • @nimazeighami Nima Zeighami on x
I don't know how many people care, but two of the things I'm most jazzed about in the Quest 3 and it's XR2 Gen 2 (~SD 8 Gen 2) vs. the Quest 2's XR2 Gen 1 (~SD 865): Quest 3 can decode 8K video at 60fps compared to Quest 2's 30fps (that's double!). AV1 decoding baby!
  • @ballmatthew Matthew Ball on x
Woah, Meta dropping Supernatural price by 50%. And not on a promotional basis. Lots of plausible reasons, from high churn to it being a great engagement driver (or device demonstrator) that not enough users can afford or even try [image]
  • @munster_gene Gene Munster on x
The rendering quality of Meta's digital assets are elementary compared to Apple's. It's not even close. It's important to note Meta's metaverse experience is priced at 1/7th the cost of Vision Pro. Looks like you get what you pay for.
  • @kantrowitz Alex Kantrowitz on x
It's clear that Tim Cook did Meta a favor. He brought the metaverse vision to a wider audience and refocused the genre. Now Meta can be the Android to Apple's Apple in a coherent space. #MetaConnect2023
  • @munster_gene Gene Munster on x
Meta Connect was a tale of two cities. The bad news is they are way behind Apple when it comes to immersive computing. The good news is the new AI features will drive engagement on Instagram. https://deepwatermgmt.com/... Deepwater is invested in Meta.
  • @vadimyuryev Vadim Yuryev on x
RIP Metaverse. $500 starting price now with better performance and displays. Honestly seems like a great price compared to Apple's Vision Pro for $3,500. They'll likely sell a lot of them now that they're not complicating things with the metaverse focus. Games and more games.
  • @aidan_wolf Aidan on x
meta introduced a very reasonable vision for AR on the Quest which focuses on digital objects that work as souvenirs and portals to your digital world, really dig it! [video]

It is a lot of money for mostly a gaming machine. Are you getting it? With the better strap and tax it is more than $600 and I bet I need new corrective lenses, too. Hard to swallow. Yes, way cheaper than Apple, but Apple has an entire ecosystem that it works with and does a lot …
  • @lunayian Luna on x
I have some criticisms and questions, but Quest 3 looks like very solid hardware. Augments need to ship really early next year if they want to sell people on MR beyond the accessibility aspect.
  • @lunayian Luna on x
[Image: colorful Quest headstraps] Pricey at $50, but it's interesting to see Meta go after this Apple Watch sort of HMD fashion. With this + the big budget ad showing a girl use it at a cafe etc. they're really leaning into a social acceptance push. Front should have been black …
  • @rabovitz Rony Abovitz on x
I love that indie companies like Lynx exist. But how can they survive the Meta Quest 3 at $499? Apple and Magic Leap are playing the high-end. Meta is aiming to vaporize the low end and middle market.
  • @mehnitesh2 Nitesh on x
@VadimYuryev Xbox gamepass streaming coming to this is a pretty big deal, play it all on a giant virtual screen, if Apple continues to cockblock it with Vision Pro that'll suck
  • @lunayian Luna on x
I am still wishing they went with a passthrough button/dial on Quest 3, double tap isn't reliable enough from a UX perspective. Maybe they've improved it though...
  • @boztank Boz on x
Meta Quest 3 is here! Built for mixed reality with high-res color passthrough, blazing fast new processor, big improvements to display & optics. Thinner and super comfortable. Starting at $499 this is the best value headset on the market for a long time to come. [video]

After watching #MetaConnect2023 I maintain everything I said before. Great hardware, but won't sell nearly as well as the Quest 2. Few million units.
  • @benbajarin Ben Bajarin on x
The @Meta Quest 3 looks promising, but I still believe we are many years away from true mainstream adoption of VR. Over the summer, we did consumer research on VR, and it only continued to affirm the chasm for VR is deep and wide. I share some data: https://creativestrategies.com…
  • @benbajarin Ben Bajarin on x
It is really odd Meta (Zuck) keeps saying they brought VR mainstream, because it is definitely not mainstreamed yet with less than 10% ownership.

I can say now that I've been hands on with Quest 3 recently. Very impressed by the upgrade being offered so far. Need more time with the headset but the new games are looking strong, feels like a good halfway point between PC VR/PSVR 2 and Quest 2. [image]

Didn't talk much about Quest 3 controllers in my hands-on because I didn't get to really put them through their paces. However, now without the tracking rings, the shape and weight feel so good now that the center of gravity is more central. [image]
