Meta unveils the $1,499 Quest Pro headset, offering eye and face tracking and color passthrough video for mixed reality, shipping on October 25 in 22 countries

Meta has finally announced the Meta Quest Pro: a $1,499 virtual reality headset it's been teasing for the past year.

The Verge Adi Robertson

Context & Ripple Effects

Reports months earlier had pointed to Project Cambria becoming Quest Pro and carrying a price above $1,000; the launch turns that premium-headset expectation into Meta's product positioning. Related coverage later describes Quest Pro as aimed at business users, clarifying why Meta paired mixed-reality hardware with eye and face tracking rather than treating it as a Quest 2 replacement.

The subsequent price cut to $1,000 and the $500 Quest 3's color mixed reality show how quickly Meta moved its mixed-reality lineup from a premium tier toward a broader consumer offering.

First-order effects

  • Meta creates a $1,499 premium Quest tier for business-oriented buyers in 22 launch markets, separating it from the lower-cost Quest 2.
  • Eye and face tracking plus color passthrough make Quest Pro Meta's initial hardware reference point for mixed-reality experiences.

Second-order effects

  • Quest Pro's price and features set a benchmark Meta later had to reset with its $1,000 price cut as it broadened the headset's appeal.
  • The $500 Quest 3 puts pressure on Quest Pro's premium position by bringing high-resolution color mixed reality to a mainstream-priced device.

Third-order effects

  • Meta's lineup points to mixed-reality features moving down the price ladder: premium hardware introduces them, while lower-cost Quest models determine whether they become mass-market defaults.
  • If Meta continues this segmentation, the Quest business will compete on distinct premium and mainstream tiers rather than a single all-purpose headset line.

The trend: Mixed reality is shifting from an expensive professional-oriented headset category toward feature sets that Meta packages into lower-priced consumer devices.

Meta Quest Pro is official — our first headset in a new high-end product line that we built with all-new advanced technologies to unlock new and exciting abilities for VR and beyond https://twitter.com/...

Apparently, the $1,500 Quest Pro has a lower screen refresh rate (90hz) versus the $400 Quest 2 (120hz). You can't make this stuff up.

For $1500, you won't sell many. Unless it gets porn. Does it get porn? https://twitter.com/...

This year's Meta Connect was one for investors and the stock price... It was disappointing for gamers with a Quest Pro at $1500 BUT this is needed to progress VR. If enterprise comes in, we'll get more people and software in the industry. I'm excited to see what this'll bring!

Maybe they will sell 1500 devices only at this price point. https://twitter.com/...

Has Meta beaten Apple to the punch with its new augmented reality headset, the Meta Quest Pro? Sure sounds like it, according to this excellent @JoannaStern review of the new face computer from Meta https://www.wsj.com/...

Are there already companies doing all their meetings in VR? If not now, what would need to change for it to ever happen? Are at least people at Facebook dogfooding with their own teams without awkwardly forcing them? https://www.theverge.com/...

So the $1499 Quest Pro has an LCD display, lower resolution, lower refresh rate, and smaller field of view than PSVR2 😬 https://twitter.com/...

@Heaney555 No type of depth meshing or LiDAR was shown?

LMFAO the Oculus Quest Pro controller has the same chip in each controller as the Moto G30. Controllers also have 3 cameras. The price is starting to make a lot more sense. https://twitter.com/...

Facebook's metaverse is dead on arrival. I said that years ago. The implementation is flawed. People do not want to use Facebook hardware. Facebook is a website and that's it. Any VR-based world will be owned by Apple, and it will have a much cooler name. https://www.washingtonpo…

@mims @JoannaStern 1 hour battery life on a built in with >2 hour recharge cycle is such a huge hurdle. Controllers look super nice though, and the value for money is excellent.

@BlakeDGross The depth sensor was cut from Cambria some time in the past 5 months - Quest Pro only has 2D cameras. Meta says it's exploring automatic plane detection, but at launch you'll need to manually mark walls & furniture as with Quest 2.

An important factor in the success of Meta's other platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) is that they're free. A high price tag is going to help ensure that many stay away from the metaverse... https://twitter.com/...

$70B invested https://twitter.com/... and this is what there is to show for it...until Apple figures this out, everybody is going to struggle. The ability to strike the right balance between design, price and performance is something unique to  https://twitter.com/...

The Quest Pro is $1,500, heavier than the Quest 2, has shorter battery life and...is aimed at businesses. But don't worry, “the metaverse” is right around the corner for everyone. Gonna be worth trillions and we'll all spend 15 hours a day in it. https://twitter.com/...
