OpenAI launches Dots, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra with their own cloud computer, in ChatGPT for Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users

OpenAI has unveiled an always-on artificial intelligent agent that's designed to proactively tackle work on a user's behalf …

Bloomberg Rachel Metz

Context & Ripple Effects

Dots extends OpenAI’s progression from a paid ChatGPT Agent that could control a computer for multi-step tasks to a persistent agent with dedicated cloud compute. Its GPT-6 Astra foundation follows Astra’s September rollout across ChatGPT, Codex and the API, giving OpenAI a common model layer for both interactive and delegated work.

The launch is initially a premium-tier feature, while a separate same-day update places Dots in the communication surfaces users already use, including ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams messaging. That makes distribution and ongoing task access, rather than a one-off prompt, central to the product.

First-order effects

  • ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise customers gain access to an always-on agent that can execute work through its own cloud computer.
  • OpenAI makes persistent agent access a differentiator for its higher-tier ChatGPT subscriptions rather than a capability available across all plans.

Second-order effects

  • Slack and Microsoft Teams become interaction points for Dots, allowing OpenAI to keep the agent reachable inside workplace messaging alongside ChatGPT.
  • OpenAI’s earlier computer-controlling ChatGPT Agent is recast as a precursor: persistence and dedicated compute turn multi-step task execution into an ongoing service rather than a session-bound feature.

Third-order effects

  • If premium customers adopt persistent delegated work, AI competition shifts from chat-model quality alone toward operating reliable cloud execution environments and the channels where users assign and monitor work.
  • Enterprise AI buying may increasingly center on governed agent access across existing work surfaces, favoring vendors that combine models, compute and distribution.

The trend: AI assistants are evolving from prompt-response tools into persistent, cloud-run agents embedded in the work surfaces where tasks are assigned and reviewed.

Thank you Mr. Altman for making Dots available only on Pro while Muse stays free across $META massive consumer base. That gives Meta a massive head start because agents get stickier as they learn more about you & every month Muse builds those habits makes it harder to replace.

  • @mweinbach Max Weinbach on x
So one of the coolest parts of dots is it can use your computer but the interesting part is it's creating a Codex thread in the cloud, but using the tools from your computer. The conversation syncs between clients and lets you essentially have 1 chat history across everything
