From January 2028, Sony plans to sell all new PlayStation games only digitally, crystallizing coverage of a renewed push for platform control and exclusivity.

Who they are

PlayStation is Sony’s gaming platform and publishing business, appearing in coverage as the home for PlayStation hardware, first-party studios, game distribution and network services. Its stories are closely tied to Sony and Sony Interactive Entertainment, while Xbox and Microsoft are the principal competitive reference points.

The recent arc

Coverage peaked in 2023Q4, during a period defined by Microsoft’s commitments to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation amid its Activision deal. More recently, the focus has shifted from that industry-wide access fight toward Sony’s own distribution and studio strategy: Sony said new PlayStation games will be digital-only from January 2028, citing a preference for digital media over discs.

The recent arc

The latest stories also describe a sharper emphasis on exclusivity. Bloomberg reported in March that Sony no longer planned to release major single-player PlayStation 5 games on PC, and Hermen Hulst subsequently told staff that narrative single-player titles would be PlayStation-exclusive. That direction sits alongside studio retrenchment, including Sony’s closure of Bluepoint Games, and selective technology investment through Sony Interactive Entertainment’s acquisition of Cinemersive Labs.

The tension

Coverage circles the conflict between broadening a game’s audience and preserving PlayStation’s distinct platform value. Microsoft has moved in the opposite direction in key cases, with Helldivers 2 becoming the first PlayStation-published game on Xbox and Microsoft planning a Halo: Combat Evolved anniversary remake for PlayStation, while Sony’s reported PC pullback and Hulst’s exclusivity stance make its premium single-player catalog a more tightly controlled differentiator. The digital-only policy adds a second control point: distribution itself, not just content, is moving further inside the platform.

Why it matters

If Sony follows through on digital-only releases and keeps major narrative games off PC, PlayStation could become more dependent on its console and digital storefront as the primary route to its biggest titles. That may strengthen the strategic role of first-party games against Xbox and Microsoft’s increasingly cross-platform approach, but the studio closure and prior emphasis on wider distribution show that the economics of making and financing those games remain a meaningful constraint.
