Sony says all new PlayStation games will only be sold in digital formats from January 2028, as digital media preference “significantly outpaces physical discs”

New games sold for PlayStation consoles will only be available digitally and won't be sold on discs effective January 2028, Sony has announced.

Game File Stephen Totilo

Context & Ripple Effects

Sony’s move follows a broader narrowing of PlayStation’s older digital infrastructure: the company has announced phased closures of PS3 and PS Vita stores, culminating in additional closures in 2027. It had also exited PlayStation movie and TV purchases and rentals in favor of streaming-oriented consumption.

The shift to digital-only new releases therefore sits alongside tighter control of digital access, including a reported one-time online license check for some PS4 and PS5 titles. Together, these moves make the PlayStation Store and Sony’s account-and-license systems more central to how customers acquire and retain access to content.

First-order effects

  • From January 2028, buyers of new PlayStation releases will need to acquire them digitally rather than choose a disc edition, while publishers distributing on PlayStation will no longer prepare new disc SKUs for the platform.
  • Sony gains a more direct role in the sale, delivery, licensing, and post-purchase access of new PlayStation games; physical-game retailers lose new-release PlayStation disc inventory.

Second-order effects

  • Publishers and retailers will have to rebalance release, promotion, and inventory plans around digital storefront availability rather than physical launch-day distribution; consumers who rely on resale, lending, or offline disc ownership will have fewer options for new titles.
  • As purchases concentrate in Sony’s digital channel, pricing, refunds, account access, and license-verification policies become more consequential to customers and publishers than they were when discs provided an alternative route to ownership and distribution.

Third-order effects

  • If other console platform holders follow, the games business could further shift from a mixed retail-and-platform model toward platform-controlled digital distribution, reducing the role of physical resale and independent retail in new releases.
  • The combination of digital-only sales, legacy-store shutdowns, and license checks is likely to keep preservation and long-term access to purchased games under scrutiny, particularly where access depends on continuing storefront and account support.

The trend: This is part of the broader transition from physical media toward platform-managed digital game libraries, where distribution, licensing, and continued access increasingly reside with the console operator.

Announcing that you're no longer producing physical games at the same time as announcing that you're shutting down a digital storefront is quite the choice

This kills consoles. No hyperbole. The whole point of a console is to a special, in person experience with the games, going to the store, getting the disc out, and playing it forever to your hearts content If all consoles will be now is just PC's with less features, count me out

You'll pay the same price as before except now you won't own shit! No discs, just empty boxes with codes. When playstation removes your games from the catalog like they are in the process of doing with 500 paid movies you'll get nothing. You'll own nothing.

In 2016, less than 3 of every 10 PS4 game purchases were made digitally. By this year, it was nearly 8 of 10 for PS4/5 That shift likely showed Sony it could do this, drop the cost of making/shipping discs, improve software profit margins, maybe de-emphasize a next-gen disc drive…

Death of physical media has been inevitable for years now but nonetheless this is a very sad day. Every day we take another step towards making sure the consumer doesn't actually own any of the things they spend their hard earned money on 👍

A word of warning to gamers in the Western world. India has seen this movie. It does not end well. Netflix created a rush of investment in streaming video that killed our home video industry completely. No discs for anything. The result has been complete mutilation of culture.

Let's sum things up recently with PlayStation - Increased PS5 Prices - Removed over 500 movies/TV shows from PS Store - Still wants to Focus on live service games after a whole generation of failure with them - Closed Bluepoint - Stop Disc Production in Jan 2028 What a joke...
  • @jawmuncher @jawmuncher on x
    - Future of your digital library is up in the air - “Closed Garden” digital means no incentive to push deals - Preservation of titles becomes questionable - You aren't going to see cheaper MSRPs with this move. There's literally no benefit to the consumer in removing physical.
