Sony says all new PlayStation games will only be sold in digital formats from January 2028, as digital media preference “significantly outpaces physical discs”

The end of an era, a potential fatal blow to video games as physical media, and a hint of what's in store for the PS6?

Game File Stephen Totilo

Context & Ripple Effects

Sony’s latest PlayStation decision follows a broader retreat from older digital storefronts: the company plans phased closures of the PS3 and PS Vita stores through July 2027. It also previously ended PlayStation Store movie and TV purchases, pointing users toward streaming services.

Together, these moves make PlayStation’s store less a permanent catalog than the primary channel for current software and services. The timing puts the disc-free policy immediately after the legacy-store wind-down.

First-order effects

  • From January 2028, PlayStation publishers and buyers of new games will use digital distribution rather than physical discs; retailers and disc-manufacturing partners lose access to this portion of new PlayStation releases.
  • Sony gains direct control over how new PlayStation games are distributed and sold, while customers’ access to those purchases becomes more dependent on the PlayStation digital ecosystem.

Second-order effects

  • Game retailers will have to shift remaining PlayStation business toward hardware, accessories, subscriptions, and digital-code sales, because new-disc releases will no longer drive launch-day traffic.
  • The closure schedule for PS3 and PS Vita stores, alongside a digital-only future for new titles, sharpens preservation and continued-access concerns for players whose libraries depend on platform-operated stores.

Third-order effects

  • If this approach persists, PlayStation’s business will move further from ownership of a durable physical copy toward platform-mediated access, with Sony’s store policies carrying greater weight over availability across console generations.
  • The combination of legacy-store closures and disc-free new releases could increase pressure for clearer expectations around redownloads, catalog continuity, and the treatment of purchased digital games, though this corpus does not indicate any policy response.

The trend: This is one data point in PlayStation’s transition from packaged media and long-lived storefront catalogs toward a tightly controlled digital distribution model for current entertainment.

  • @stephentotilo Stephen Totilo on x
In 2016, less than 3 of every 10 PS4 game purchases were made digitally. By this year, it was nearly 8 of 10 for PS4/5 That shift likely showed Sony it could do this, drop the cost of making/shipping discs, improve software profit margins, maybe de-emphasize a next-gen disc drive…

It's finally happening, the PS3 and PS Vita Stores are shutting down within the next year It was inevitable but man, I'm still super sad. A lot of digital only games/DLC that haven't been brought forward are just gonna be gone forever [image]

Death of physical media has been inevitable for years now but nonetheless this is a very sad day. Every day we take another step towards making sure the consumer doesn't actually own any of the things they spend their hard earned money on 👍

A word of warning to gamers in the Western world. India has seen this movie. It does not end well. Netflix created a rush of investment in streaming video that killed our home video industry completely. No discs for anything. The result has been complete mutilation of culture.
  • @lowkeymattyt @lowkeymattyt on x
This kills consoles. No hyperbole. The whole point of a console is to a special, in person experience with the games, going to the store, getting the disc out, and playing it forever to your hearts content If all consoles will be now is just PC's with less features, count me out

Let's sum things up recently with PlayStation - Increased PS5 Prices - Removed over 500 movies/TV shows from PS Store - Still wants to Focus on live service games after a whole generation of failure with them - Closed Bluepoint - Stop Disc Production in Jan 2028 What a joke...
  • @jawmuncher @jawmuncher on x
    - Future of your digital library is up in the air - “Closed Garden” digital means no incentive to push deals - Preservation of titles becomes questionable - You aren't going to see cheaper MSRPs with this move. There's literally no benefit to the consumer in removing physical.
  • @omegaproyt @omegaproyt on x
Announcing that you're no longer producing physical games at the same time as announcing that you're shutting down a digital storefront is quite the choice
  • @kalaelizabeth Kala Elizabeth on x
You'll pay the same price as before except now you won't own shit! No discs, just empty boxes with codes. When playstation removes your games from the catalog like they are in the process of doing with 500 paid movies you'll get nothing. You'll own nothing.
