Who they are

Parler is a right-wing social network that has appeared in coverage as a self-described “censorship free” platform whose ability to operate depends on app-store access, cloud hosting, moderation policies, and ownership. CEO Ryan Rhodes has represented the company in its latest return to Apple’s iOS App Store.

The recent arc

Later coverage moved from deplatforming to ownership instability and attempted reconstruction. Ye agreed to acquire Parler in October 2022 to build an “uncancelable ecosystem,” but the parties terminated the intended sale in December; reporting also said parent Parlement Technologies had sought buyers and that Parler had about 50,000 daily active users. After reported layoffs at Parlement, Starboard acquired Parler in April 2023 and planned a temporary shutdown before a relaunch. The most recent story, from March 2024, covers its return to the iOS App Store under Rhodes, with new features and moderation again foregrounded.

The tension

Coverage repeatedly circles the conflict between Parler’s open-platform positioning and the operational rules imposed by gatekeepers such as Apple and Amazon. It also sits in a crowded right-wing social-media field: Truth Social surpassed Parler, Gab, Gettr, MeWe, and Minds in unique visitors, largely because Donald Trump posted there, while research linked Russia’s reactivated troll and bot networks to Gab, Parler, and other platforms.

Why it matters

Parler’s trajectory shows that alternative social platforms are shaped not only by audience demand but by access to distribution, infrastructure, and credible moderation. If the Starboard-era relaunch and App Store return hold, the company may test whether an open-platform brand can sustain compliance with those dependencies; its limited reported user base, competitive pressure from Truth Social, and prior ownership disruption leave that outcome uncertain.
