Kalshi

55 articles decelerating

A 2026 push into perpetual futures and weather markets has put Kalshi at the center of fights over prediction-market regulation, gambling law and insider trading.

Who they are

Kalshi is a prediction-markets platform whose coverage centers on the boundary between CFTC-regulated financial contracts and activities that states, lawmakers and critics may characterize as gambling. It appears alongside rival Polymarket, regulator CFTC, CEO Tarek Mansour and distribution or product partner Coinbase.

The recent arc

Coverage accelerated sharply through 2026, peaking in the second quarter as Kalshi moved beyond its core prediction contracts while scrutiny intensified. May headlines focused on plans for CFTC-regulated perpetual futures and the Coinbase-Kalshi launch of perpetual crypto futures for U.S. investors; June brought a CFTC proposal that could prohibit prediction bets considered against the public interest or especially manipulation-prone. A bipartisan bill from Senators Adam Schiff and John Curtis targeting sports betting on CFTC-regulated platforms put Kalshi and Polymarket in the same legislative frame.

The third quarter shifted attention to enforcement and state-law conflict. New York sued Kalshi over alleged gambling-law violations, while the CFTC sought to block the state’s enforcement; a Washington judge then ordered the company to stop offering most contracts in that state after finding likely violations. Kalshi also removed sports-related word-choice bets amid a reported CFTC probe, partnered with Weather Co. to verify weather-market settlements, and issued its first lifetime ban after allegations involving George Santos. Its latest reported product ambition is regulatory approval for single-stock perpetual futures.

The tension

The central tension is whether Kalshi can expand a federally regulated market structure into sports, news-adjacent, weather and crypto-linked contracts without creating products vulnerable to manipulation or treated as unlawful gambling. Polymarket is the recurring competitive comparator, while the CFTC is both the regulatory foundation for Kalshi’s expansion and the source of probes and proposed constraints; state authorities and courts have emerged as a separate, more immediate challenge.

Why it matters

Kalshi’s trajectory tests whether prediction markets can become a broader U.S. trading category rather than a niche election-market product. If its regulated-futures and weather initiatives proceed, partnerships such as Coinbase and Weather Co. could extend that model into more conventional financial and data-verified use cases; however, the state litigation, proposed CFTC rules and insider-trading enforcement show that expansion may depend as much on market-integrity controls and jurisdictional outcomes as on product demand.

Kalshi has appeared in 55 articles since 2021-02. Coverage peaked in 2026Q2 with 46 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside Polymarket, CFTC, Tarek Mansour, Coinbase.
