A video of Meta's Connect 2022 keynote, showcasing the Quest Pro mixed reality headset, plans for the metaverse, new partnerships, and more

Context & Ripple Effects

This keynote video is the record of the moment Meta had been building toward since announcing Connect would be virtual back in September: the public debut of the Quest Pro as a $1,499 mixed-reality headset with eye and face tracking, plus a metaverse roadmap pitched alongside it.

What makes the 2022 keynote worth revisiting is how much of its agenda aged into the platform's actual direction — the same-day Microsoft partnership bringing Teams, Office, Windows 365, and Xbox Cloud Gaming to Quest set up the enterprise push, while later keynotes show the framing shifting toward AI features powered by Llama 3.1 and cheaper hardware like the Quest 3S.

First-order effects

  • Quest Pro buyers in 22 countries get a device positioned for work as much as play, with eye and face tracking feeding Meta's avatars for meetings.
  • Microsoft's productivity suite becomes available on Quest headsets within months, making the headset a plausible office endpoint rather than a gaming-only device.

Second-order effects

  • Microsoft gains a standalone-VR distribution channel for Teams and Windows 365 without building its own headset, deepening a partnership that shapes what 'work in VR' means on Meta's platform.
  • The keynote's partnership-heavy format establishes a template that later Connects extend to media — culminating in the 2025 Horizon TV hub with Disney+, ESPN, and studio deals for 3D movies.

Third-order effects

  • Across successive keynotes, Meta's pitch migrates from metaverse-first ambition (2022) to AI features and cheaper hardware (2024) to content hubs (2025), suggesting the headset strategy now follows whatever software narrative — social, work, or AI — has momentum each year.

The trend: Meta's annual Connect keynotes are becoming the running ledger of its platform pivots, with each year's headline product revealing which narrative — metaverse, AI, or media — currently anchors the Quest business.

We've made great strides to help advance the metaverse and the future of computing as we know it. It is still very early days, but the impact of a computing platform centered around people will be tremendously profound. A recap of today's announcements: https://tech.fb.com/...

These are really, really good VR studio “gets” for Meta. Another PS Studios partner punched from under Sony's nose in Camoflaj. Did Meta ever finalise the deal for Twisted Pixel? https://twitter.com/...

My final thought on the Quest Pro: until now I did not realize how much of my facial motion involves teeth and tongue, the two things its cameras don't track.
