Sources: Apple plans an always-on lock screen for the iPhone 14 Pro, major iPadOS windowing and multitasking changes, and iOS-like System Preferences for macOS

Apple's upcoming iOS 16 is likely to upgrade the lock screen, messaging and health features.  Also: Another Apple car manager leaves …

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple had already been working through iPad multitasking and widget placement in its earlier software plans, including planned iPad multitasking improvements. The new reporting broadens that effort across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac rather than treating each interface as a separate update.

The reported iOS-like Mac settings redesign also anticipates the later cross-platform interface revamp described for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS: Apple is using common interaction patterns to make its device lineup feel more consistent.

First-order effects

  • Apple would give iPhone 14 Pro a distinct lock-screen behavior, while iOS 16 users would receive changes to the lock screen, messaging, and health features.
  • iPadOS users would face a more substantial change in how apps are arranged and used simultaneously, and Mac users would navigate a System Preferences design modeled on iOS.

Second-order effects

  • Apple’s iPad software proposition shifts toward workflows that need multiple windows, raising the importance of app layouts and multitasking behavior for iPad developers.
  • A settings interface closer to iOS reduces one visible difference between Apple’s desktop and mobile platforms, making design consistency a more central part of the Mac experience.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple continues linking iPhone, iPad, and Mac interaction patterns, platform differentiation will increasingly rest on device-specific capabilities such as the reported iPhone 14 Pro display rather than wholly separate software conventions.
  • The pattern points to Apple treating system-interface redesign as a cross-device product strategy, later reinforced by reporting of a shared design direction across its operating systems.

The trend: Apple is converging core interface conventions across its devices while reserving selected hardware-linked experiences for premium models.

More and more reasons to pay more for the 14 Pro models :) Apple is about to go all-in on upsell marketing. Raise that ASP (average sales price) or die trying. https://twitter.com/...
  • @gruber John Gruber on x
@Alticus @rjonesy That the hardware can support it doesn't mean Apple would enable it on exiting hardware. They would've enabled the feature a year or two ago if they thought it was a good idea for existing hardware.
  • @gartenberg Michael Gartenberg on x
Many of rumors around iPhone and iPad sure sounds an awful lot like things that have been on Samsung device for quite some time. I know, yes, others have done this before but ours is the only right way to do it. See, watching video on portable screens like the ipod.
  • @maazmz @maazmz on x
@VadimYuryev For a regular use extra core GPU won't matter. A better selfie camera will be 10% better but Apple will market it as a groundbreaking feature so thats gonna be one of the selling point. Resr of the things not justifiable for a generation change. Could be 13S lol.

They're gonna make it look like a stretched out iPad app where everything has 20 pt margins and all the icons are just glyphs. 😒 https://twitter.com/...

feeling. feeling. iOS 16 will be a massive release.

hot take: WWDC is more exciting than the iPhone September/fall event.

The groundwork for an always-on #iPhone14Pro display could be laid during #WWDC, with support supposedly arriving in #iOS16. https://appleinsider.com/... https://twitter.com/...

@MaazMz Regular 6.1" model won't change that much. Same $699 price. New upgraded selfie camera. 5-core GPU instead of 4-core. Some new features to go along with that. Maybe better cooling and battery life. Better wireless/Bluetooth specs. New U2 chip? Who knows.

If I am Apple and I am looking for new audio social features to add to Messages, I'd look no further than walkie-talkie on Apple Watch. Here's what it could look like if incorporated into the Messages app on iPhone. https://twitter.com/...

This is great news if true. If true, 16 is gonna be enough of a big change with features to make me update https://twitter.com/...
  • @maazmz @maazmz on x
How is Apple gonna justify the price for iPhone 14? The same chipset same notch same display same size same battery same camera. What are they gonna change? They will add new colours that i know what else?
  • @gruber John Gruber on x
@rjonesy Always-on Lock Screen would almost certainly be a hardware-gated feature, not an issue feature. Like Apple Watch.
  • @vadimyuryev Vadim Yuryev on x
@MaazMz I expect a more significant selfie camera upgrade, but yes, this seems like it could be similar to the iPhone XS update. The new Max model is the main point of the upgrade. The new 14 Max model will be the hype this year for the low-end.

    - Always-on display (exclusive to high-end iPhone 14 models) - Redesigned Lock Screen with new wallpapers and widgets! - Major updates to Messages with more social network feel - iPadOS windowing and multitasking sounds pretty massive to me. https://www.macrumors.com/... https://…

I know better than to get excited about improvements to iPad, because we've been burned so many times... But WebKit just added infrastructure for a ‘multitasking mode’ on iOS that sure looks like it's a system toggle that enables freely-resizable windows

    (1/4) According to TSMC's public announcements & the roadmap (source: https://fuse.wikichip.org/...): 1. Significantly better N3 & N4P won't start mass production until 2023. 2. N5P & N4 are the latest technologies Apple can use for 2H22 products. 3. N4 has no advantages vs. N5P.…
  • @vnchocotaco @vnchocotaco on x
From a fairly reliable source, but take this one with a big grain of MSG. A16 Bionic will continue to use 5nm from TSMC N5P. From the list I received from source “TSMCFF5” Upgrades are slightly better CPU, LPDDR5 RAM and better GPU. (1/3)
  • @mingchikuo @mingchikuo on x
(4/4) There is nothing bad with naming a minor-upgrade CPU of all-new design MBA as M2, which can also help new MBA sales. But if M2 series aims to bring great upgrades vs. M1 series and further enhance Apple Silicon's brand image, using 2023 N3/N4P wafer for M2 is better.
  • @theapplehub @theapplehub on x
Guys hear me out: M1 iPhone 14
  • @mingchikuo @mingchikuo on x
(2/4) A15 is made by TSMC N5P. Because N4 has no advantages vs. N5P, it's reasonable for A16 to stick with the N5P, implying that improvements in performance and power-saving from A16 should be limited. Naming iPhone 14 Pro's chip as A16 is more of a marketing purpose.
  • @vnchocotaco @vnchocotaco on x
Apple was not happy about the Apple Silicon leaks... https://twitter.com/...
  • @mingchikuo @mingchikuo on x
(3/4) All-new design MacBook Air's CPU encounters the same technical limitations as A16. But I think it's another case. All-new design is already a big selling point for new MBA. Leaving much-anticipated M2 series debut to next 14"/16" MBP may contribute more to Apple.
  • @cesarberardini @cesarberardini on x
If @mingchikuo says it...He's indirectly confirming what I told you months ago on the true reason why Apple's mixed reality visor 🥽 is launching in 2023 because it needs N3. https://twitter.com/...
