Apple Mac Studio review: compact design with lightning fast M1 Ultra and great port selection but expensive, not modular, and unimpressive graphics performance

This computer is a historic achievement  —  Apple's 2019 desktop release was supposed to be the computer that professional Mac users had been waiting for.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to open a Mac Studio. Which isn't a surprise as far as RAM or GPU upgrades - we knew Apple would never allow that... but the thermals on this machine are super important and we can't even clean out the fans every few months 🙃 https://twitter.…

Moves like this are part of the bigger reason why I choose not to get into the Apple ecosystem or any ecosystem as a matter of fact (it's just worse with Apple). You buy the products, but you don't own them 😶 https://twitter.com/...

The first Mac Studio reviews are in, and it seems to be a powerful workstation in a compact package, designed for creative professionals. But single-core performance isn't any better than an entry-level M1 chip. So only certain tasks will be faster. https://www.techmeme.com/...

A little Mac Studio review for us video editors. I was able to run a number of tests using all our favorite editing software. It's a great machine. More testing to be done #macstudio #PostChat https://www.provideocoalition.com/ ...

So far, from what I've been seeing. The M1 Ultra Mac Studio is impressive compared to older Intel machines, but compared to the M1 Max 16" MacBook Pro, it's really underwhelming. In some common tasks, reviewers are seeing 50% improvements or less, at best. https://twitter.com/...

@DetroitBORG I think if there's any way in, it's through that gap. Clearly not meant to be accessed by a normal customer, though.

@ianzelbo I have a feeling that jam-packing so much different silicon and cores all into a small die has some limitations. Either it can't pump enough power through it for some reason, or Apple just wants to power cap the M1 Max dies even though they can handle more heat.

Juicy media-processing benchmarks from DPReview highlight Apple M1 perf deltas between Pro/Max and effect of memory: https://www.dpreview.com/... My tl;dr: MBPro with a “mere” M1 Pro CPU & 32G is the sweet spot. Extra-heavy video *might* justify the M1 Max.

Ohhhh, so that's how Apple created a weird graph seemingly showing the M1 Ultra is more powerful than an RTX 3090 (which it isn't) They based it on power consumption and cut off the part showing how much more powerful Nvidia's card gets with more electricity @cgartenberg https://…

Follow-up: This display is running a current build of iOS 15.4 and generates its own sysdiagnose file containing the phrase “iPhone-OS_AppleDisplay.” So it's basically an iPhone 11.

Just buy a new Mac Studio every few months. It comes with clean fans right out of the box. Problem solved. ✅ https://twitter.com/...
  • @vadimyuryev Vadim Yuryev on x
On top of that, I'd expect more performance out of the media engines. Some video exports just didn't seem that impressive. I guess we'll find out tomorrow!
  • @stroughtonsmith Steve Troughton-Smith on x
What's the point of Apple providing any graphics numbers when nobody outside the company can reproduce them? Publish your benchmark suite you cowards! 😂

Is this real life? How is the fastest Mac in the world this small? I'll try to get my #MacStudio with #M1Ultra review done soon, just real sleepy from staying up until 5am finishing on the Studio Display video https://twitter.com/...

What's the little pill-shaped hole on the bottom of the Mac Studio for? Kensington security lock? And much more importantly, why isn't it a pill + hole like the iPhone 14 Pro? 😛 https://twitter.com/...

@MKBHD I see a seam along that plastic perimeter strip? Perhaps it's like the original mini, a credit card or prying tool might do the trick.

CPU good, GPU not so much: “Apple .. claimed .. M1 Ultra would outperform Nvidia's RTX 3090. I have no idea where Apple's getting that from .. Mac Studio got .. destroyed. It got less than half .. not beating Nvidia's chip, but it's not even coming close.” https://www.theverge.co…

<50% perf gain is pretty terrible TSMC InFO-L (and other interposer solutions) don't seem to provide enough bandwidth for GPU performance to scale well This is another sign pointing towards Navi3X using TSMC SoIC (just like 5800X3D) for D2D communication https://twitter.com/... h…

afaik, there are only x86 builds of tomb raider, so the fact that the Mac is so close to a PC with a 3090 while using rosetta is kinda insane. https://twitter.com/...

I have tracked @Apple's processor claims around 10 years. The company has consistently: -made claims w/o evidence or delayed -stretched the truth -compared against wrong products The company doesn't have to do this, they have good products. Stop it. $AAPL https://t.co/VIrnN1xzvg

  • @reckless Nilay Patel on x
The M1 Ultra is a triumph, but Apple's goofy “relative performance” charts set it up for a needless 3090 comparison that wasn't borne out in any of our testing. Here's @cgartenberg on the Case of the Wacky Charts https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/...

As the glowing reviews for the Mac Studio roll in, a consistent criticism remains: the inability to upgrade. I agree and hope the consolidation of resources onto a single dye/PCB results in RPi Compute Module-like socket solution.
  • @dbreunig Drew Breunig on x
Apple, there's a way to square this with your profit goals: so many would pay $1k for a drop in CPU and memory upgrade. And you wouldn't have to actually extrude the aluminum.

WIRED Excellent performance. Easy setup. Relatively compact. Plenty of ports. Up to 8 terabytes of storage. TIRED Expensive. Apple doesn't include a stand and a VESA mount for the display; you have to choose one or the other. https://www.wired.com/...

The performance (I had the Max, and other reviews of Ultra show similarly stellar results) is extremely good. It's got a lot of ports, it's ridiculously quiet and it's finally an amazing desktop Mac with some choose your own adventure included. https://twitter.com/...

Here's @mcsquared96's review of the Mac Studio, with both M1 Ultra and M1 Max - an incredible machine, and the Ultra is a historic achievement in chip design. 2x performance of the M1 Max across the board, seamlessly for every app we tried. Wow. https://www.theverge.com/...
