Apple has suspended Parler from the App Store, saying Parler “has not taken adequate measures” to address threats to people's safety on its platform

similar to how a TestFlight app expires after 90 days. I imagine they revoke certificates frequently in markets where piracy is rampant. They revoked Facebook's internal cert that time Mark Gurman / @markgurman : Jobs said in 2008 that the App Store has a “kill switch” where it could disable apps across the iPhone install base. But I haven't seen Apple use that lever to date — nor does it appear that the company has mentioned it since this Jobs interview: https://www.macworld.com/... Candace Owens / @realcandaceo : This is an incredibly exciting time to be a tech entrepreneur. More than half of our country (& world) is looking for an alternative to @Apple and @Google @elonmusk could overtake them both—virtually overnight— if he announced an E-phone with its own operating service. Glenn Greenwald / @ggreenwald : It was a *Democratic-controlled* House sub-committee that just a few months ago issued a lengthy report concluding that FB, Amazon, Google & Apple are *monopolies*. That means competition is impossible. Now Dems are happy that it's used for them: https://arstechnica.com/... Glenn Greenwald / @ggreenwald : For years, I heard it's invalid to object to political censorship by FB & Twitter because, if you don't like it, you can just create a competing social media platform. Parler tried. And in 24 hours, Google, Apple & Amazon united to destroy it. That's what monopoly power means. Nicole Perlroth / @nicoleperlroth : Parler deleted a comment about @DevinNunes suing a cow but let this comment about “skinning” and “butchering” women and children stand is pretty much all you need to know about why Apple, Google and Amazon pulled it. https://twitter.com/... Chris Messina / @chrismessina : @Acyn Lol “no way to communicate” https://twitter.com/... David Rothkopf / @djrothkopf : On a TV network devoted exclusively to covering Republican issues for a Republican audience, Devin Nunes says Republicans have no way to communicate. https://twitter.com/... Vinny Lingham / @vinnylingham : @AspenMartini @naval He's right though. The app stores are gatekeepers now. And Amazon controls the web. I'm a liberal but I don't believe that the liberal view should control what people can see or hear. That censorship. I lived through apartheid - everything was censored. Don't want that again. Benedict Evans / @benedictevans : There's a very obvious comparison between Parler's vendors cutting it off and Visa/MC cutting off Mindgeek, or Cloudflare/8Chan. Are the specific issues narrow/extreme enough that this doesn't become a generalised trend of de facto regulation from the bottom of the stack? Candace Owens / @realcandaceo : @elonmusk the future is yours if you want to do it. Tech creators are now being told they have to censor millions and millions of people—including a sitting President— if they want to exist in the Apple and Google store. We hate both of these companies. Give us an alternative. Richard Hoeg / @hoeglaw : Side note: If Big Tech wants to win some of these antitrust complaints they should probably stop doing everything in lockstep all the time. https://twitter.com/... @ow : It's incredible that as Twitter, Reddit, and even *Facebook* are finally stepping up to remove hate from their platforms, Substack and Clubhouse are doubling down on no moderation at all. Anthony Scaramucci / @scaramucci : Private Publicly traded companies showing civic responsibility and virtue. Where are the elected leaders? Apple has suspended Parler from the App Store amid concerns the app's owner hasn't done enough to address threats of violence on the platform https://www.wsj.com/... Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg / @theradr : Good, ok. But let's not forget that it took an armed mob breaking into the bedrock institution of democracy seeking to overthrow election results and, apparently, to murder elected officials for all these folks now taking action to take white supremacist terrorism seriously. https://twitter.com/... Libertarian Mama / @libertarianmama : This is the type of stuff that is frightening to me. AWS hosts probably 50% of web content. https://twitter.com/... Ryan Brown / @toadsanime : Again, pretty disgusting that big tech just this week decided to start acting on the alt-right when they could've done so all along, but hey, I'll take it. https://twitter.com/... Benedict Evans / @benedictevans : Apple has been doing this in privacy already - acting as a privacy regulator by default. But does the same now apply to half your tech stack? @kvue : ICYMI: Parler was first removed from @Google's, then @Apple's app stores. Now @amazon is suspending it on its web-hosting service https://www.kvue.com/... @techinsider : 🔴 Parler's CEO John Matze responded angrily after Jack Dorsey endorsed Apple's removal of the site from the App Store. https://www.businessinsider.com/ ... Tom Namako / @tomnamako : the red wedding of online fascism continues https://www.buzzfeednews.com/ ... Keith Olbermann / @keitholbermann : I felt a sudden disturbance in The Force. As if millions of paranoid voices cried out in self-delusion... https://twitter.com/... Sara A. Joanna Stern / @joannastern : Well, it's an exciting Sunday for the makers of Parlor—not Parler. #spellingishard https://twitter.com/... Michael Marshall / @mrmmarsh : Libertarians: “private companies should be totally free to decide how their businesses operate, to compel them otherwise is violence” Facebook: *dumps Trump* Twitter: *dumps Trump* Google: *dumps Parler* Apple: *dumps Parler* Libertarians: “wait, no, not like that” @hunterwalk : @Carnage4Life I see them too Dare Obasanjo / @carnage4life : I'm literally doing Twitter search queries with from:* and seeing people who've been silent about all of the complaints about Apple's App Store policies for years who fired up half a dozen tweets over a pro white supremacist, pro insurrectionist app being banned. We see you. @naval : First they ban accounts. Then, they ban apps. Finally, they will block websites. @rmac18 : While Apple and Google cut off distribution, Amazon suspending AWS eliminates Parler's foundation. It's a crushing blow that will take Parler's site and app offline at 11:59 pm PST on Sunday. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/ ... James Pethokoukis / @jimpethokoukis : Amazon is under no obligation to let its services be used as tools for insurrection. https://twitter.com/... @docrussjackson : Both @Google & @Apple have removed #Parler - the dystopian self-help app for gullible, damaged, & delusional middle-aged white bigotry-addicts, who believe they are THE REAL VICTIMS, & who confuse free speech with spouting stultifyingly pig-ignorant shite & calling for violence. https://twitter.com/... Ryan Brown / @toadsanime : It's pretty disgusting that big tech just this week decided to start enacting on the alt-right when they could've done so all along, but hey, I'll take it. https://twitter.com/... JMDavis / @jessmarindavis : Okay, banks and FinTech companies, your turn. PayPal, GoFundMe, credit card companies, and many more have provided financial services to individuals and groups involved in Wednesday's incident, and have helped extremists profit from their propaganda. https://www.nytimes.com/... Kamran Bokhari / @kamranbokhari : I find myself torn on this issue. My security analysis side says this is absolutely necessary! But then the part that does pol assessments says this will exacerbate the underlying dynamics that led to Jan 6. We can't allow extremists to manipulate genuine grievances. https://twitter.com/... Brannon McAllister / @brannonmc : Same thing I was getting at earlier. Being booted off Twitter is one thing, being blocked from using standard web services is another. It's closer to having the power company cut power to your building. Only warranted in extreme circumstances. They may know more than we do. https://twitter.com/... Pfiza Minnelli / @catherinebuca : Quite apart from anything else, this is why comrades should be working to develop robust irl networks beyond specific online platforms. Organise like it's 1968, folks. https://twitter.com/... Daisy Gardner / @daisykpgardner : Parler just got kicked off the Internet (unless they can quickly find more servers to host them, which seems unlikely if they were built to be housed on Amazon AWS). https://twitter.com/... Those of us in the #crypto community who were/are supportive of banning Trump in the context of private companies can do w/e ... are you also supportive here? I'm fine w/ it only bc our various #web3 bags will MEGA pump 🚀 https://twitter.com/... David Yelland / @davidyelland : Parler's demise is an inflexion point. It also shows that without unregulated, wild west-era social media we would have had no Trump. And no Brexit. Our tragedy is the latter cannot be reversed. via @NYTimes https://www.nytimes.com/...

It's one thing for Google to take Parler out of its Android app store, since anyone can side-load it without Google permission. It's another for Apple to ban it, since there's no alternative (antitrust issue IMO). Parler is a cesspool but should just 2 companies become the law?

@moduletux The difference is that I'm not saying that the Big Tech companies *can't* do this (as Epic is), I'm saying they are stupid to do it in this fashion and are going to get themselves (and the rest of the Internet) regulated.
