Apple gives Parler 24 hours to institute a full moderation policy or face expulsion from the App Store, according to emails between the two companies
Apple has given Parler, the social network favored by conservatives and extremists, an ultimatum to implement a full moderation plan …
BuzzFeed News
Context & Ripple Effects
Apple's ultimatum put Parler's App Store distribution on the line over its moderation plan. It was quickly reinforced by Google's Play Store suspension over enforcement policies, making the dispute a cross-store access problem rather than an Apple-only warning.
The immediate deadline became an actual removal: Apple subsequently suspended Parler from the App Store, while its later approval of Parler's return tied reinstatement to moderation improvements.
First-order effects
- Parler must produce and implement a full moderation policy within Apple's 24-hour window or lose access to the App Store.
- Apple turns moderation enforcement into a condition of continued App Store distribution for Parler.
Second-order effects
- Google's concurrent enforcement means Parler faces reduced mobile-store availability across both major storefronts, increasing the practical urgency of its policy response.
- Parler's later return to the App Store after moderation improvements establishes compliance changes as the route back to distribution, not merely a condition for avoiding removal.
Third-order effects
- App-store operators are asserting content-moderation rules as operational requirements for platform access, giving distribution gatekeepers a direct role in how social services enforce safety policies.
- If this enforcement pattern persists, social platforms seeking mobile distribution will need moderation systems that satisfy store-review standards alongside their own user-policy choices.
The trend: Mobile app stores are becoming active gatekeepers of social-platform moderation through suspension and reinstatement decisions.

Honest question for @AppStore and @GooglePlay . If Parler continues to allow incitement and calls for violence, doesn't that break your Terms of Service for apps?

I don't disagree. The higher in the stack you are, the more leeway you should have on regulation. But the metaphor needs a clarification since there are other roads to the restaurant. Even on an iPhone you can still access Parler via browser. https://twitter.com/...

With Parler removed from the Google Play store and Apple threatening the same, what happens next? Nature abhors a vacuum, certainly some app will step up to take its place. Glad to see this happening, but I'd like some clear guidance on how they won't let it get this bad again.
