Blood oxygen data in next Apple Watch. This is a data type used in Covid19 detection and management, as well as a concern during wildfire air https://www.google.com/...
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
Apple uses the term “Apple silicon” for the first time to describe a processor outside its upcoming Arm-based Macs. Apple Watch Series 6 has a variation of iPhone 11's A13 processor. Dual-core, 20% faster than the last watch. #AppleEvent https://twitter.com/...

Apple is being careful about making a Covid link to this sensor: launching a couple of research programs to find out how much this could tell you
  • @snazzyq Quinn Nelson on x
Apple is the #1 watchmaker in the world by revenue and they still don't know how to make good watch faces. It's flabbergasting to me that they don't hire (or at least listen to) actual watch-face designers.
  • @neilcybart Neil Cybart on x
How can Apple ever go back to regular product presentations after these “virtual” presentations? Does Apple just stream product unveiling videos in Steve Jobs Theater?
  • @reneritchie Rene Ritchie on x
S6 SiP is based on A13 Bionic SoC. Wow. Literally no substantial competition in wearable silicon to date and Apple is still racing ahead with the S-Series.
  • @hearthealthydoc Heather Ross on x
I'm so excited for @trogersresearch to partner with @Apple in a historic collaboration that will move patient care from the hospital to their wrists. Using Apple Watch metrics we can revolutionize our ability to monitor and manage heart failure patients https://www.apple.com/...
  • @baxterkb Kathy Baxter on x
I want to know if this was tested w/ a broad range of genders & skin tones. The accuracy of current pulse oximeters is lower for darker skin tones because they weren't designed & tested for darker skin tones. #Transparency #Representativeness #Equality https://pubs.asahq.org/... …

Apple just announced it is partnering with health networks to start large-scale studies using the new blood oxygen measurement feature on the Apple Watch, including seeing if it can detect COVID-19 infections, but that's just one potential use case. https://www.theverge.com/....

Medical professionals: What do you think about the new Apple Watch adding monitoring for blood oxygen levels? (We don't know a ton yet, but Apple has announced that there will be studies, which is an approach it has taken in the past.) https://www.theverge.com/...
  • @neilcybart Neil Cybart on x
You can now set up Apple Watches for family members who don't have iPhones. Family Setup for Apple Watch is a very big deal. An inflection point for Apple Watch.
  • @benbajarin Ben Bajarin on x
I maintain Apple's positioning of Apple Watch as an intelligent guardian of your health is one of the best product positioning statements of all time. Blood oxygen sensor just deepens this positioning.
  • @stroughtonsmith Steve Troughton-Smith on x
I wasn't in the running for an Apple Watch this year, but a blood oxygen sensor feels like a really important thing to have right now in the middle of a deadly pandemic. Maybe worth justifying this as a medical purchase for every family member? https://twitter.com/...
  • @cloud_opinion @cloud_opinion on x
so, new Apple Watch will not include a charger, which means if it runs out of charge, you throw it trash and buy a new one. This is a cool way to spend $300 per day with Apple. I am buying Apple stock.

There's a new Solo Loop for the Apple Watch. No clasp, no buckle, no overlapping parts. It's stretchable so you can slip it on and off your wrist. Available in a range of sizes and it comes in 7 colors, plus Apple made a braided version too. https://twitter.com/...

I like that elevation feature on the Apple Watch. Watching it fall rapidly as you zoom down a ski slope could be fun. Be good if it showed diving depths too... #AppleEvent

We have no idea how well this works yet. Haven't tried the new watch. But this really does set a new standard in these Covid times. Every subsequent wearable launch will prompt the question: “But does it have a blood oxygen sensor?”
  • @jon_prosser Jon Prosser on x
“bUt JoN, hOW cAn ThEy fiLL a WhoLe eVeNt wIth jUsT aPpLe wAtcH anD iPaD!?” Apple: spends 15 minutes telling you the new Apple Watch is blue

    “there's a watch face for that” https://twitter.com/...
  • @shiraovide Shira Ovide on x
So, is Apple trying to sell people a thing that measures blood oxygen levels, in the middle of this particular pandemic that affects blood oxygen levels, while trying not to seem gross about it?
  • @benthompson Ben Thompson on x
Apple doing everything they can to insinuate that the oxymeter is useful for COVID without actually saying so...
  • @geoffreyfowler Geoffrey A. Fowler on x
Very interesting that Apple stopped short of linking the new blood oxygen sensor in the Series 6 watch to Covid. I'm glad they're not over-hypng this. #AppleEvent https://twitter.com/...

Three new trials (Asthma and Influenza included.)
  • @andymanganelli Andrew Manganelli on x
Can't wait for anti maskers to have proof they're wrong right there on their wrists!
  • @geoffreyfowler Geoffrey A. Fowler on x
First Covid mention on the #appleEvent. Will they pitch the blood oxygen sensor as a Covid protection?
  • @nicnguyen Nicole Nguyen on x
A correction: Family Setup is only available for Apple Watch 4 and newer. Yep, Apple really did launch a kids mode that doesn't work with the 3, the cheapest available watch. https://www.wsj.com/...
  • @nicnguyen Nicole Nguyen on x
🆕 column The takeaway of today's event: The current pricing tier is confusing. And the best Apple Watch and iPad for most people isn't Apple's best Watch or iPad. https://www.wsj.com/...
  • @benwood Ben Wood on x
With the Watch 6, Watch SE and the continuation of the Watch 3, Apple now offers a clear “good, better, best” tiering structure for its customers, delivering choice at a range of prices. #AppleEvent https://twitter.com/...
  • @marcoarment Marco Arment on x
Family Setup (Watch for kids/"older relatives" without their own iPhones, paired to your phone instead) is a huge deal.
  • @snazzyq Quinn Nelson on x
why keep series 3 in the lineup...?
  • @bzamayo Benjamin Mayo on x
$279 is good but I feel like a lot of price-sensitive customers are still gonna buy the $199 Series 3
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
What's missing from the Apple Watch SE: Always on display, steel/titanium options, blood oxygen and ECG, S6 chip (has S5 instead), U1 chip, 5GHz WiFi. Rest looks to be the same.
  • @wongmjane Jane Manchun Wong on x
With Apple Watch SE priced in $279, how can Android smartwatches survive? #AppleEvent https://twitter.com/...
  • @mgsiegler M.G. Siegler on x
I don't understand using ‘SE’ versus calling this the ‘Apple Watch’ and the top of the line ‘Apple Watch Pro’ #AppleEvent
  • @sandofsky Ben Sandofsky on x
    SE: Semi Expensive
  • @techledes Connie Guglielmo on x
Introducing Apple Watch SE .... “All at a more affordable price.” Uses S5 chip and shares many other tech from Series 6. “Cellular models will also be great for kids.” #AppleEvent
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
Apple Watch SE starts at $279. “We think the Apple Watch SE will be the perfect watch for many new customers,” Williams says. https://twitter.com/...
  • @willoremus Will Oremus on x
WOW, just heard the new apple watch will be *most advanced apple watch yet.* unbelievable, how do they keep making the most advanced watch yet, every time!!
  • @asymco Horace Dediu on x
    Apple Watch starts at 40cents/day
  • @marcoarment Marco Arment on x
Damn it, Series 3 is still around, further pushing back the interval that developers have to support 32-bit on the Watch and the old 38/42 screen sizes. Apple Watch SE needs to be $199, not $279.
  • @reneritchie Rene Ritchie on x
Apple Watch SE uses the S5 chip. Cellular option. Great for Family Setup. Includes gyro, compass, ultimate, fall detection. Perfect for new customers. $279, Apple Card financing over 24 months available.
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
There it is: Apple removing USB power adapters from Apple Watch. Next month: iPhone.
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
Looks like the Apple Watch titanium and Hermes models still have the power adapter. So the more expensive versions keep it. Makes it seem like its less of an an environment thing and more cost-driven.
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on x
Apple launching cellular Apple Watch features in the UK with Truphone, an MVNO, not a primary carrier. I remember when that would have been a huge deal - now it's a footnote.
  • @siracusa John Siracusa on x
If you never charge your Apple Watch, it has an even lower carbon footprint.
  • @tapbot_paul Paul Haddad on x
“We're not shipping a power adapter because we care and we'll pass on the savings to our bank account.”
  • @jonyiveparody @jonyiveparody on x
Apple: “We take environmental responsibility very seriously.” Also Apple: “Here is a new Apple Watch Solo Loop that we produce in 21 different sizes.” #AppleEvent
  • @mkbhd Marques Brownlee on x
They also, as expected, have just announced they're removing the USB power adapter from Apple Watch packaging. In the environmental section. You can bet that's the angle for when they remove it from the iPhone box too.
  • @benthompson Ben Thompson on x
Congratulations to Apple on framing a cost-saving maneuver as an environmental consideration.
  • @reneritchie Rene Ritchie on x
This year we are removing USB power adapter from Apple Watch. Will result in eliminating 50,000 cars carbon equivalent from environment. (Start arguing about USB power adapter deletion now!)
  • @stshank Stephen Shankland on x
No USB charger for new Apple Watches. Apple's Lisa Jackson packages this news in the context of its environmental efforts, which is fair, but also seems to duck the issue a bit. #AppleWatch
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on x
Apple no longer including a power adapter with a new Apple watch - and celebrating it as a way to reduce carbon footprint with duplicate adapters (!) Seems a certainty they'll do the same with the new phone in a few weeks
