The end of Kinect manufacturing closes a chapter Microsoft had been winding down for years: it had already phased out the original Kinect for Windows in 2015 and stopped producing the v2 PC sensors that April, pointing developers at the functionally identical Xbox One unit instead. What followed shows the technology outliving the product — Microsoft repositioned the depth camera as an enterprise play with Project Kinect for Azure in 2018, only to later announce it is discontinuing the Azure Kinect Developer Kit in 2023.

So the 2017 shutdown reads less like a product failure than a migration: ~35M units sold since 2010 made Kinect a mass-market depth sensor, and the hardware has since found a second life in interactive art, pornography, and ghost hunting even as Microsoft itself moved the core sensing work toward Azure AI.
