Kinect's consumer story had already ended twice before this announcement: Microsoft phased out Kinect for Windows in 2015, then stopped manufacturing Kinect outright in 2017 after roughly 35M units sold since 2010. Project Kinect for Azure is the third act — the depth-sensing hardware survives, but repositioned as an enterprise peripheral whose intelligence lives in Azure AI rather than in an Xbox.

The pivot matters because it converts a retired gaming accessory into cloud attach: the custom sensor package is only useful alongside Azure services, making each camera sold a recurring-revenue hook rather than a one-time hardware sale.
