There's been rumors for over a year that Arm is pursuing making its own chips. SoftBank buying Ampere is a shortcut to this idea, even if it isn't part of Arm Holdings plc. — This, plus SoftBank buying GraphCore is an interesting development. [embedded post]

Expected to close 2H25. Ampere will be a wholly owned subsidiary, and retain the name. Had $813m of total funding over 7 rounds. Softbank also acquired Graphcore last year for an undisclosed sum.

Ampere to be acquired by SoftBank for around $6.5 Billion. I some implications here with what we expect to see next from $ARM and the whole Stargate program...👀

So Softbank wanted to push for NVIDIA to buy Arm but also wanted that focus to be on standard IP and move away from non-standard Arm IP = architectural licensees. Then they buy a company making non-standard IP Arm cores. Makes sense... 😅
