Just before Christmas I had the opportunity to sit down with @AMD CTO and EVP Mark Papermaster. We spoke about the current rate of innovation, as well as how similar (or different) chip design is compared to his time at IBM. Chiplets forever it seems! https://www.youtube.com/... [image]

Q&A with SiFive co-founder Krste Asanović, who was part of the original team that developed RISC-V, on creating a company that builds IP around RISC-V, and more

Update: SiFive just announced today that it has partnered with NVIDIA for NVLink Fusion on RISC-V. It's a big step, and we'll be covering that separately.

I think @GlobalFoundries is on a CPU IP frenzy. In 2025 they acquired @mips_riscv for RISC-V IP and business, and now they're buying @Synopsys' RISC-V core IP (called Arc) as well https://news.synopsys.com/... Note: MIPS' cores are R5, not MIPS. Note: SNPS' cores are R5, not Arc. 🙃

Looks like @NVIDIA just extracted @Groq's employees and a non-exclusive hardware license to bring it into NVLink for $20B.  @Groq remains running GroqCloud, but everyone of note joins NVIDIA, including CTO and architects.  What is going on? (a) If they were acquiring for the middle-east business, I'd kinda get it.  Or just an acquihire - expensive though.  Groq's lead architect joined NV a couple years ago.  (b) If they wanted to remove a competitor, expensive for a minor player comparitively (c) There's that much cash burning a hole at NV?

@danielnewmanUV @PatrickMoorhead I think it's more the fact that NVIDIA was creating test chips there through a government funded program explicitly, not an actual committment to anything ever.

How CEO Lip-Bu Tan gave Intel a lifeline after meeting with Trump in August; sources say Nvidia tested Intel's 18A to make chips but stopped moving forward

Re NVIDIA no longer making test chips on 18A.  IT WAS A GOVERNMENT PROGRAM to allow potential partners to build designs using PDKs.  It was never a committment to anything longer term than a few tests.  I've been telling investors and others for ages and still, no-one seemed to realise.  See this slide at Intel's event...

It's all going on today.  @MicronTech announced that it is winding down its @CrucialMemory and storage consumer brands.  It will continue to ship through to fiscal Q2 (Feb 2026), and provide support.  This is being driven by the need to move that supply and support AI and datacenter customers in faster-moving segments.  I expect Micron will still sell chips to third parties to build into consumer parts, but it will no longer do so under its own brand.
