Today's AppleEvent was the first one where it didn't even occur to me to look at what people were saying on X. The Following feed on the Threads desktop site handled it all just fine

there is clearly one person at apple who is blocking them from putting the fun colors on the pro model iphones and i think they've had a long and successful career and now it's time for them to retire.  AppleEvent

Apple was talking a big game about trade-in values, but they're super meh on the unlocked route.  $520 for an iPhone 15 Pro towards a 16 Pro.  They're clearly leaving this all on the carriers

Goodbye, iPhone 15 Pro Max! All I needed was that 5x telephoto on the smaller phone!
  • @snazzylabs Quinn Nelson on x
This is the first compelling base-model iPhone Apple has released in a few years. I always tend to recommend the prior-year's Pro instead, but perhaps no longer!

Desert Titanium sounds like a name that Apple Intelligence came up with.

It saddens me to see the demise of Anandtech and The Tech Report, and then to see all these YouTube tech influencers more excited about being at an iPhone event in their posts than critically and honestly reviewing the barely incremental improvements. Consumers have lost out.

new iPhone Pros recording Spatial Audio during video capture is cool new iPhone Pros recording Spatial Video only at 1080p 30fps still is uncool
  • @maxwinebach Max Weinbach on x
A18 Pro is 35 TOPS but on iOS, this matters far less than other devices. CoreML uses all parts of the SoC depending on what you're doing and what block of the SoC is most efficient. And with, likely, ARM v9.2 and SME2, that number isn't a good way to judge AI performance
  • @maxwinebach Max Weinbach on x
A18 Pro has larger CPU cache and a different media engine, different DSP and ISP than A18 Has gotta be a different die Super interesting

Pricing of 16 Pro models. $999 and $1,199, same as the 15. We have seen iPhone price increases over the past few years. Last year they raised the price of the Pro Max from $1,099 to $1,199. The unchanged pricing shows Apple's hand that they don't want to push it with the soft

Interesting to see Apple is bumping up MagSafe charging speeds on the iPhone 16 line. Can now charge at 25W (so long as you have a 30W brick). On iPhone 15, charging via MagSafe was limited to 15W.

The iPhone 16 Pro appears to be differentiated from the base model *only* due to AI performance: there isn't a killer feature like USB-C support like last year. It entirely relies on normies finding the Apple Intelligence use cases important which I suspect won't be the case.

iPhone 16 will be able to capture spatial photos and video. Nice - Apple making spatial photos and video capture more accessible. These steps are important as we all will one day want to look back at our old photos and videos (the ones we are taking now) on spatial computers.
