Movidius is the third piece of a deliberate 2016 build-out: Intel bought German drone maker Ascending Technologies in January, then picked up computer-vision firm Itseez in May for its IoT and autonomous-car push, and now adds a roughly 180-person team making low-power vision chips for drones and virtual reality.

The fit runs through hardware Intel already ships: UAV segment GM Anil Nanduri has tied Intel's drone strategy to its RealSense cameras, and Movidius gives that stack dedicated silicon for machine vision at the edge. The bet held long enough that deep-learning startup Vertex.AI was later folded into the Movidius unit rather than absorbed elsewhere.

  • Intel gains Movidius's ultra-low-power vision-processing chips, giving its RealSense-based drone and VR products on-device computer vision instead of offloading perception to external hardware.
