Intel buys German drone maker Ascending Technologies

Intel's drone move is not an isolated purchase. Months earlier the company put $67M into eight Chinese companies, including Segway owner Ninebot — a robotics bet that signaled where its non-PC money was heading. Buying Ascending Technologies outright converts that minority-stake approach into ownership of a working German drone manufacturer.

The acquisition also slots into a broader stack-building effort: Intel's own UAV segment GM has since laid out how RealSense cameras fit its drone roadmap, and within a year Intel followed with the Movidius deal for low-power vision chips aimed at drones and VR. Chips, cameras, positioning (via the later HERE stake), and now airframes — this is the first airframe piece.
