Chip maker Intel, in its bid to expand from its core PC and server business to all manner of devices, is buying Itseez, a machine vision specialist co-founded by two former Intel techies.

This acquisition is the opening move in a multi-year buying spree: Intel starts with Itseez, a small machine-vision shop whose two co-founders are ex-Intel researchers coming back inside, explicitly to feed an IoT and autonomous-car push beyond its PC and server core.

The template repeats quickly — Movidius for drone and VR vision chips months later, then deep-learning startup Vertex.AI folded into that same unit — before Intel pays its real price for the thesis with the $15.3B Mobileye deal, and by 2024 it is shipping AI-enabled car SoCs alongside the Silicon Mobility purchase.
