Movidius is the third vision-and-drones purchase Intel has announced in 2016 alone, following German drone maker Ascending Technologies in January and computer vision firm Itseez, co-founded by two former Intel researchers, in May. The through-line is perception silicon: chips that let machines see, aimed at drones, VR, and eventually cars and IoT.

The deal also gives Intel a ready-made home for future deep-learning software work — two years later it would fold the Vertex.AI acquisition into its Movidius unit, keeping PlaidML open source. With roughly 180 employees, Movidius is small, but it slots directly into the RealSense camera and drone roadmap Intel's UAV segment has been articulating publicly.
