Intel's acquisition of Itseez is the opening move in what became a rapid build-out of a machine-perception portfolio through 2016-2019. The target is small but symbolically loaded: two former Intel researchers returning with open-source computer vision expertise that maps directly onto the company's stated push into IoT devices and connected cars.

The deal set a template Intel kept following — within months it bought Movidius, maker of vision chips for drones and VR, then committed $250M via Intel Capital to autonomous vehicle technology, and later folded its Mobileye unit's roadmap around road-experience data harvesting and EyeQ4 SoC integration. Itseez was the software layer that made those hardware bets coherent.
