A look at how Apple's hubris doomed its electric car project, its spring hardware updates that won't have a dedicated event, and Dan Riccio's retirement plans

Apple's belief that it could create a better car than Tesla and the rest of the automotive industry ultimately led to the downfall of the project.

It's kind of ironic that people say Apple wasted its time on cars instead of AI when I suspect the only reason they were doing cars was that 8-10 years ago we thought AI could make autonomy work.

there would be no reason for Apple do develop a car unless it was full self-driving.  Their brand was not going to get them the margins they require for just a slightly better car than everyone else.  They believed all the companies saying full autonomous driving was around the c…

A few additional points: retail stores are low on MacBook Airs and iPad Pros; Stores are planning a minor refresh for this week (I think it's a new accessory rather than a new product); Stores are planning a larger refresh early next week (which sounds more product-related).

Under Cook: - Apple's revenue grew from $108B (FY 2011) to $383B (FY 2023) - Apple has hired ~100K more employees - Apple launched two category leaders: Apple Watch (life saving) + AirPods - Apple silicon Macs But I still don't think Tim is obsessively focused on his “legacy.”

Google has delivered a superior autonomous car; Apples car project was mired in leadership and strategy changes.  Opposite Day.  [The Verge Screenshot: “California gives Waymo the green light to expand robotaxi operations"]

Why is there always so much talk about Tim Cook's legacy? Does he even care about having this absolutely exceptional legacy? Is the world's most popular smartwatch and the world's most popular wireless headphones not enough? He has done good work and I'm sure he is very proud.

No Event seems odd with all the rumored changes expected to the pro lineup. Either way I'm looking forward to it.

Yup, told you guys it was Tesla's massive success and impossibly low pricing that killed the Apple Car project. Watch my video if you're interested :) https://www.youtube.com/... [image]

What to expect from Apple soon based on rumors: - Two new iPad Pro models with the M3 chip, OLED displays, a thinner enclosure, a landscape-oriented front camera, a redesigned rear camera bump, and possibly MagSafe wireless charging - Two new iPad Air models with the M2 chip,...

@ParkerOrtolani Or given lack of revolution and more evolution perhaps it's best not to call too much attention with just an infomercial they know the right people will watch and not a full blown event. Tone it down a notch if the products aren't toned up to at least a 9 if not a…

If they felt the need to do an event for the M3 MB Pro and iMac, then I wonder if these new iPads are more underwhelming than has been rumored. Seems like they have *more* for an event in March than they did in October.

NEW: Apple is not planning a traditional Apple Event for its upcoming iPads, Macs, new Magic Keyboard, and new Apple Pencil, according to @markgurman. Instead, he expects Apple to “announce the new products on its website with a series of online videos and marketing campaigns.”

@rsgnl @markgurman Pretty sad that the last time there was a new iPad in a real event was September 2021
