A couple of thoughts on Apple's car cancelation: 1) I was actually really looking forward to what they were going to do in this space—and flipping my car over to charge it.  2) The carmakers vs. CarPlay.  Should be interesting to see where we go from here and if Apple makes a big…

It was never clear to me what exactly Apple could do in cars.  It could make a nice EV, but that's not its business.  The place for Apple to create a new kind of experience is in autonomy, where you actually do need to change the interface and rethink what the car would be.  But …

Thank God.  This was an idea that never made any sense to me.  Why would you choose to go into a high-overhead/low-margin business when you literally print money right now? https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Always thought it was weird the Apple car came with a giant external battery pack that you carried around in a separate trailer.  Makes sense given the other stuff they prioritized, but still.

Goodbye Apple Transport Pro, we hardly knew ye.  All I wanted was a car that could be charged with a lightning cable.  Sadly that dream died today.
  • @mossbergwalt Walt Mossberg on threads
Honestly not surprised.  Massive competition makes margins too low.  And the product would be highly regulated, which Apple hates.

if true, this probably makes as good a milestone as any to mark the end of the wild 10-year period when the tech giants seemed to think they could conquer literally any industry they felt like conquering on a given day

This project has seemed cursed from the start, but I always thought we would still see a nice car out of it eventually.  Wild that Apple is pulling the plug!

I hope this is the final nail in the coffin of the idea that self-driving cars will make any meaningful difference in transportation.  It was never true, but distracted so many people from real solutions for over a decade.  —  Having more money than sense, Apple threw billions at…

The decision was finalized this month by Apple's top executives after the project reached a make-or-break point. The company spent years changing strategy in an effort to save the effort. The company is laying off some working on car hardware. Others moving to AI division.

Apple just told 2,000 employees of Project Titan, it's electric car project, that it's given up on competing with Tesla and they be pivoting to AI. I guess companies competing with Tesla is turning into a ZIRP similar to competing with Netflix. [image]

Your regular reminder that making cars is really rather difficult. Especially when aiming for Apple-like profit margins. Still, rather sad to finally see the end of Project Titan. I'm old enough to remember when Faraday Future was rumoured to be a front for the Apple car.

Multiple outlets reporting Apple will be winding down Project Titan. Realization that full autonomy was not right around the corner likely played a role. Selling $100K+ EVs that people drive & own doesn't change the industry enough. Here's me in 2022: https://www.aboveavalon.com/…

Sorry to see Apple's Project Titan EV effort canceled. If anyone had the resources to bring something to market and the will and brand power to make it stick, it was them. Not to mention that they wouldn't have been held back by legacy ICE manufacturing. https://www.ign.com/...

$AAPL is killing Project Titian (reported by Bloomberg's Gurman) to focus on AI. I'm shocked. This ends almost a decade of investment into finding a way into a massive addressable market. While most investors were skeptical that Apple would actually coming out with a car, the...

Apple doesn't have any real technology or UI advantage in autos (& TVs). That's why Apple doesn't make TVs (only AppleTV) & it's same reason it shouldn't make typical cars/EVs (iPhones + CarPlay is fine enough) https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Apple has cancelled its decade-long effort to build an EV. The writing was on the wall for Apple with a much different EV landscape forming that would have made this an uphill battle. Most of these Project Titan engineers now all focused on AI at Apple which is the right move🍎
  • @greengart Avi Greengart on x
If full/safe autonomy isn't ready, a car simply makes no sense for Apple. There are better uses for Apple's executives' attention — the real limiting factor for a company with unlimited funds but a culture of focusing on a few products and doing them “right.”

I was wrong on the Apple Car, and even more wrong on the Apple Television (killed in 2017).  Over the past three years, I'd put the odds at 50% that Apple Car would see the light of day.  Most investors put the odds at 10%.  Separately, before today's news, I had the odds at 90% …

  • @stanphylcap @stanphylcap on x
Funny that Apple killed this car because it realized that Level 4 autonomy is too far away for a consumer product, yet Musk keeps perpetuating that fraud at $TSLA, despite scores of video now showing that his “next level neuronet Version 12” is no better than Vs 8-11 preceding it

The abandonment of its self driving electric project means Apple's hope for a next big think is their headsets and whatever they can achieve with AI. I'm still stunned that 10 years of effort is going to be thrown away and will never see the light of day. https://www.bloomberg.co…

NEW: In abandoning a car, Apple is giving up on billions in potential revenue and the dream of selling the what the guy who killed the project once called the “ultimate mobile device.” Now, the spotlight turns to AI and mixed-reality, for better or worse. https://www.bloomberg.co…
