I attended the WWDC 2023 keynote, and here are some of my 10 key takeaways from the show. I distilled my thoughts on Vision Pro, OS incrementalism, remarkable improvements on the Apple Watch, and some small but important sidenotes. https://om.co/... [image]

Releasing a Mac Pro with the same chip as the Mac Studio is a bit of a head scratcher especially if the PCIe slots don't support AMD or NVIDIA graphics cards which seems to be the case. The Studio has plenty of expansion with Thunderbolt 4 so why spend so much more on the Mac Pro

why is the mac pro 3k more than the mac studio with the same chip lol
  • @techwizyt Conor on x
@SnazzyLabs The Mac Pro is essentially just a Mac Studio which can be upgraded which is kinda disappointing because I would've hoped it would have more ram/cpu cores

This is not powerful enough for pros

@ianzelbo No MPX slots. Means no GPUs...

Sorry, but the new Mac Pro is a meme [image]

I feel like in 99 out of 100 cases you should just buy a Mac Studio instead of a Mac Pro since the Mac Pro is like $3000 more and for. for what? underpowered PCIe slots???
  • @luciascarlet @luciascarlet on x
the new Mac Pro feels like such a half-arsed update like wow you inflated a Mac Studio and put it in the old Mac Pro enclosure Congratulations! maximum RAM being reduced to 192 GB from 1.5 TB is a HUGE blow for some highly specialised use cases the old Mac Pro accommodated

    MAC PRO GETS APPLE SILICON

The new Mac Pro... I waited 3 years for them to chuck an M2 Ultra in there for SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS [image]

@dnystedt Apple Silicon is excellent, but the proper comparison should be current generation x86 chips from Intel and AMD - not ancient prior gen chips (criticizing Apple not you)

Apple takes swipes at Intel with new M2 Ultra chips made on TSMC 2nd generation 5nm process “M2 Ultra is the world's most powerful chip ever created for a personal computer” -"Mac Studio is up to 6x faster than the most powerful Intel-based 27-inch iMac" -"Mac Pro is up to 3x... …

2/2 “M2 Ultra is built using a second-generation 5-nanometer process” M2 Ultra chip has 134 billion transistors — 20 billion more than M1 Ultra -800GB/s of system memory bandwidth and -supports 50% more memory capacity, 192GB -24-core CPU is 20% faster -76-core GPU up to 30%... h…

The new Apple M2 Ultra chip will allow me to build AI models that are far larger than the memory of current GPUs. This may be the massive game changer for Private and Personal local AI. Love it! [image]
  • @markhachman Mark Hachman on x
M1 Max was 57 billion transistors. M1 Ultra doubled that, essentially. Any guesses on how big the M2 Ultra is?

M1 Macbook Air (£900)with student discount is still the best value macbook for 90% of people out there, don't let Apple rob you with their marketing
  • @stufflistings Mukul Sharma on x
Another interesting (not in a good way though) thing that I noticed is the fact that Apple reduced the pricing of the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air by $100. For India, however, the price drop is ₹5,000. So, price hikes in INR are more than USD, but it's exactly the other way around... h…

Apple's 15" MacBook Air gets the same 18-hour battery life as the 13" model, despite a 26.4% larger battery. What's going on here? The 15" has 26" more total pixels. 2.8K display vs 2.5K display. Looks like the M2 Air is so efficient that the display uses the most power? [image]
  • @rsgnl Joe Rossignol on x
Unlike the latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Pro models launched this year, it looks like the 15-inch MacBook Air doesn't support Wi-Fi 6E. I wonder if this is a sign that Apple intended to launch this laptop last year.

The 15" MacBook Air is about to be my main/only computer. Price was awesome, feature set was almost perfect (effing thunderbolt 3), and size is exactly what I need. The other products were kind 🤷‍♂️
