Apple updates its Mac mini with M2 and M2 Pro options, improved graphics performance, up to 32GB of RAM, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and more, starting at $599

Apple today launched the new Mac mini lineup, available with M2 and M2 Pro chips inside.  The M2 Mac mini starts at a new lower price of $599.

9to5Mac Benjamin Mayo

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple had already moved the Mac mini from Intel to M1-based Apple silicon while lowering its starting price from the 2018 Intel model’s $799 to $699. The M2 generation extends that transition with a further $100 entry-price cut and a higher-end Pro configuration.

The update arrived alongside M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pros, giving Apple a more coherent M2-based Mac range across desktop and notebook form factors. Subsequent coverage also identifies the Mac mini’s lack of front ports and SD card support as a practical constraint for peripheral-heavy setups.

First-order effects

  • Mac mini buyers get a $599 entry point, M2 Pro performance options, and up to 32GB of RAM, widening the configurations available within Apple’s smallest desktop.
  • Apple replaces the M1 Mac mini’s $699 starting position with a lower-priced M2 model while preserving a higher-spec tier through M2 Pro.

Second-order effects

  • Buyers weighing Apple’s M2 MacBook Pros against a desktop setup now face a clearer price-and-form-factor split: the Mac mini starts far below the notebooks, while sharing the same chip generation.
  • Peripheral-dependent Mac mini users may still need hubs or other accessories because the later M2 Pro review’s port critique limits how fully the internal upgrade addresses desk setup needs.

Third-order effects

  • Apple’s sequence from the 2018 Intel model through M1, M2, and the later smaller M4 Mac mini points to the Mac mini becoming a recurring vehicle for bringing successive Apple-silicon tiers to desktop buyers without raising its $599 entry price.
  • If that cadence holds, Mac mini differentiation will increasingly rest on chip tier, memory ceiling, physical design, and I/O rather than on a separate Intel-era platform transition.

The trend: Apple is standardizing its Mac lineup around successive in-house chip generations while using the Mac mini to maintain a low desktop entry price and segment buyers by performance tier.

With the Intel Mac Mini being discontinued, the Mac Pro is the last Apple product you can buy with an Intel chip. https://twitter.com/...

@dylan522p There are multiple interesting workloads that are not captured by the usual 1st day low-tech non-engineer benchmarks, and which could have been improved substantially... These include anything VM related (esp TLB issues) and anything AMX related.

Why are people surprised about the node? We said this a year ago at semianalysis “Apple has already designed and taped out the M2 Pro and M2 Max which are still on N5 and A15 base IP.”

Apple M2 Pro and Max released today M2 uarch with a few more GPU cores and E CPU cores. They held up the actual die in the video which is fun. Up to 20% faster CPU and up to 30% faster GPU. I'm skeptical of the CPU claim given M1->M2 gains $AAPL $INTC $AMD https://www.youtube.com…

Huh interesting... 2022 is indeed in the url and the video filename... 🤔 https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

New MacBook Pros with M2 Pro/Max chips announced! Apple's going big on “longest battery life ever in a Mac” and says it gets 22 hours. I tested that last year, when the claim was 21 hours. Sure, if you just watch video, turn off WiFi and other stuff! https://www.youtube.com/... h…

Repeat after me: I don't need a new MacBook Pro M2 Max to compile my indie projects
